If it's the 30904 which is what are in my 9846-8A's, then it's a zobel for the woofer, and an R/C arrangement that i "think" attenuates the low end of the horn's range to better match the much less sensitive woofer. The "bonus" is that it also tends to extend useable HF response.
My pair were finished an epoxy spatter/texture type finish needing significant body work not only to address bumps and bruises over the years, but also to address the internal voids on a couple pieces of just plain junk plywood used in their construction. The top of one cabinet had a very fine split in the thin top veneer layer, it was caused by a large 3 inch dia. knothole in the first core layer of plywood. After carefully poking and feeling around i was able to locate a few more, used an exacto knife to remove the outer veneer over the voids then filled them as well as the other bruises with bondo.
I wasn't gonna get real fussy about paint, so i opted to use the same dark gray Benjamin Moore porch and deck enamel that i used on my 828 boxes. It's a near perfect match in any but the brightest light, and being a latex enamel you can apply it in your basement or attached workshop/garage without the hassle of toxic or flammable fumes. Cut edges and tight spots with two coats by brush first then do the entire box with a 4 inch roller and defy your friends to prove you didn't spray them.
The auto parts store quoted me 135 bucks a galon for epoxy texture in the correct color, plus i'd have to buy a special "texture" gun to spray it on with, i couldn't justify the cost.
EDIT: I should add that i need to sand them completely down and repaint again. I didn't bother to sand or fill the remaining texture from the original paint, i wanted to see how noticeable any contrast between the bondoed/sanded areas and the original texture would be. Certain light angles make them unacceptable, so my feeling is either be prepared to fully sand flat or fill the top and side panels or flip for the expense of the texture paint.
