    422's

More musical instrument stuff--nice price and you don't see 422's every day..... I know we have at least one member in this neighborhood although he's probably got more woofers than he needs (Columbus, OH)......

    altec lansing 15 inch woofers

In retrospect, this could have been one thread not half a dozen D'oh!

In their defense, those sound pretty good in a tuned box...my chief objection is the aluminum dome. I put a 4 inch felt over it..the slight added mass also results in lowered resonance, while getting rid of the overtones from the dome..

Can also be reconed as 416-a.

    Re: 422's

Domes are like 5 bucks a pair, glue another 5...DIY is pretty easy, probably get a local reconer to do it for 40 or so...

"bout 90 each to recone as 416 last I heard...

If they are in good shape, I would just do the domes..

Brother has a 418 core and 421 core I think he wants 25 each for if anybody needs. PM and will put you in touch.
I don't ship anything unless it fits in a free post office box. Getting FedEx or UPS out here to pick up is impossible. I thought about trying to get carrier pigeons to rig a line between them but they wouldn't cooperate.

    Re: 422's

I wasn't clear. I meant what would it cost to recone a 422 and make it a 416 if such a thing is possible. Also, what is a core?
    many thanks
    les

uh, never mind. I didn't read your post fully.
    thanks

    Re: 422's

Core is a term for a rebuildable part. Term used a lot in the car parts industry...if you buy a starter there is a "core charge" you can get back by trading in your old one, they then take that "core" and rebuild it.
Same with a distributor, or any unit that would be rebuilt. Some parts have become disposable due to cheap Chinese stuff on the market, cheaper to get a new Chinese one than to rebuild the old one.

A rebuildable speaker is therefore a "core" as you use the central portion as the base for a rebuild.

That rebuild price was good last I checked, best to call GPA first.

    Re: 422's

The cost for re-cone is about $120 each and figure on about $ 20 to ship one way.For round trip for a pair $80-$100 depending on your location of course. I had a pair of 416's that needed re-cone,re-mag,etc total cost from Bill was $286.70 + Shipping. But my re-cone came with extra testing and T/S measurements specs as I wanted them to be identical for my dual woofer project. The testing IIRC was about $25 extra per woofer, which Bill really didn't want to do.But I told him I needed the woofers to be the same as they were being used in a dual woofer config. He also had them for 2 months.Couldn't understand why the Alnico wouldn't take a charge, but as it turned out because of them being stored face down for a very long time it (cone) pulled the v coils out of the gaps. As it was explained to me.But they sound very nice now !

Can you tell it's been a long time since I reconed a set?
