Re: Mail call and a question....

looking good my friend,if you gonna keep it for long time you might want to put a quater inch veneer or other type of wood on top of mudding for more support and also for beauties,if you want to keep it in the living room not alot of wifes like bulky and ugly looks, but for us she is a beauties. Why i was saying that is when shift the speakers in place to place i pull off the mudding with my hand well, that's my experience

    Progress....

First coat of sealant is done. Still have some touch up on the edges, but otherwise should I do another coat or go straight to paint? I've almost used up the quart I bought.

It kinda depresses me to see how much I missed when working on these things. But, the object is to give these new warriors new life, not make them into trailer queens. They were designed to be speakers that worked for a living, so be it....

I'd probably go with color after getting any little spots you missed, or looked really thin/soaked in. I don't have much experience painting wood like this, but I'd guess a solid/even coverage of the primer isn't needed. It's for adhesion, stain blocking, and sealing up the wood surface, not for looking pretty.

    Re: Progress....

Primer doesn't have all that much pigment, so it won't cover all that evenly, but it is now ready for top coat, although now is the time to find and touch-up any little blemishes or pinholes, followed by a dab of primer over the touch up spots only. Then, two coats of top coat. Looking real good. Make sure to flip them over and prime and paint the bottoms before painting the tops.

I would also sand the primer with 320 grit paper and use a tack cloth just before your next coat.

Yup "Battleship Gray" Altec used a lot of the surplus Navy paint they had on hand during the war (WW II) and they never changed after the war.

Ok, maybe not purple pastel, but Gray is a primer, under coat color, and does not deserve to be on the surface of anything; cars, houses and even Altec speakers.
