Altec 511B placed vertically instead of horisontally

A problem with the Altec 511B horn may be the width.

How will a verticalla placed horn sound in a living room compared to a
horn placed, as on A7/VOTT horisontally.

How will the sound be affected ?

Is it a good idea ?

That's an idea the folks at the Lansing Heritage site are experimenting with: 2350 horn sideways

Re: Altec 511B placed vertically instead of horisontally

Theoretically, it?s a 90 x 40 deg horn on average, so turned vertically it will have a lot of floor/ceiling early reflections in room if the LP isn?t inside a 90 deg arc with a much narrower 'sweet spot', which overall is a good thing if the LP is fairly far away, but in reality it?s ~ 75 deg horizontally up to ~4 kHz where it collapses to ~55 deg/8 kHz and vertically it linearly collapses from ~135 deg to ~40 deg/8 kHz.

Initially then, no vertical early reflections if the LP is inside a ~75 deg arc and a collapsing on axis response more typical of a 5? ?FR? driver than expo radial horn; so mounted up around 3-5 ft off the floor on axis depending on the LP distance and tilted down to the LP will at most only have floor bounce in a typical 8 ft high room, which can be damped with carpeting, thick accent rug or similar.

The trade-off is a really narrow ?sweet spot? up high, so a super tweeter horn or direct radiator array may be required with some room layouts/personal listening preferences.

WRT matching them up through the XO BW, there?s little flexibility due to the ?fast? rising on axis horizontal response, so laying the A7 down on its side would be preferable as you ideally need a ~200 Hz XO point.

For direct radiator alignments, you?re pretty much limited to 500 Hz/2nd order up to ~700 Hz/4th order.
