Seller seems like a decent fellow. He had a couple mistakes in post, he corrected and thanked me.

Sooo tempted.... I like the idea of going down to 500hz... Do you think these would be too small for my 11 x 20 living room? (snicker) I suppose if I took both sliding doors off I could roll them in and lean them against the front wall. (Insert ROTF Emoticon here)

I got thinking about these, and a freight train of reality ran me down.

Most of us would want to change out the phragms to all aluminum versions. By the time you're done you'll be less than 80 bucks away from the cost of a brand new pair of GPA 288's 299's or 399's($340 ea). I can find the extra 80 to end up with brand new made in USA product that helps support a USA company.

At the end of the day i'm thinkin that 400 bux for a pair of mud magnet 291's ain't such a bargain.

I've been selling some stuff and building a little nest egg toward a pair of large format drivers, i'm now pretty sure i'll be going with new GPA product and may even try to find the extra few hundred for alnico versions.

    Just my .02 y'all understand........................................ .

Agreed with qualifiers. Be aware not the same drivers, as the GPA won't have the large pot casting. Not necessary for higher xover points. But when Altec released the second generation they did a tech letter with convincing arguments or the added mass.

Always appreciate your insightful and experienced input OG!

I've wondered about this on and off. Initially, i'll be running MR64A's with a target XO around 625hz 2nd order as i understand the MR's don't load well at their cutoff rating.

But, i wonder if this will be backing myself into a corner should multi-cells ever become a possibility for me.

Any thoughts on mass loading a GPA driver or driver/throat assembly?

Modelling clay is cheap and comes off. Or perhaps anchoring the driver to a solid block or 2x4 posts, with a strap and hard rubber padding?

Adding mass or mechanical bracing usually works.
