This explanation was posted on ebay with regards to identifying A's (can't vouch for its accuracy):
Q: What you have there are Altec 511A's. 3 things prove they are 511's. 1. They are 2 castings welded together, only altec did this and only with the 511 and 811 horns. 2. the interior verticle welded support back near the throat, only found on altec 511. 3. the external hanging points, unique only to the 511. 511's were introduced a few years after any affiliation with western electric was disolved. What makes these particular horns a bit unique is the fact there are no bolt holes in the front flange............. this is what makes it an A model instead of the more common B. Also, only the 811B had the model number cast in them. I have 3 pairs of 511's all of different vintage and none have the model cast in them. Hope this helps, best regards, Tom
