.................

Convergence you are being just plain silly.

Th 816 engine is a Duplex.

Saying the 816 box is the engine is ridiculous- the 816 wasn't called the engine without the Duplex. That box was offered with different speakers.

BILL OWNS THE name Engine. He can call a 9 volt battery the Engine if he wants.

The Bottom Line is that box with the Duplex was the original Engine. There were several more Engines, all Duplex based.

You have a tendency to read two lines of type and post it as the whole truth- it is much more than that.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL ENGINE. Get your facts straight.

The units in those are true 2 separate drivers but with a 1.4 inch HF driver.

Not to be confused with the 212 8A which uses a common magnet for both drivers.

Dear OG,
We redesigned the 816 with dual vents to make it pretty for the 9864A and 9894A. We added a grille, suspension points and a special mounting bracket. Later I needed a well controlled low frequency assembly to support the VIR and VIT horns (I was the marketing manager that brought the VI series to market). The 98xxA cabinet was perfect! I proposed the first loaded 816 offered by Altec and we called it "816VI" to tie it to the VI horns.

One more time, the "Engine" was the component used in the speakers listed on my last note. The definition of an "Engine" is a single shared magnet. All Altec coaxial speakers (8" to 16")are called Duplex(R). The large "Engine" was never offered as a componet. The small "Engine" was offered as a 15" ceiling speaker (model 950-8A, the 950-8B was an EV copy with the HF driver on the back ala 604).

Although Bill H. developed the original "Engine", the latest version was developed by the fiends at Altec Lansing Technologies. I was part of the team that developed it. The CD1012-8A (ceiling speaker) is Bill's design ("Engine" with 299 HF) with a sweet little horn and crossover by Charlie Hughes. We are all very lucky that Bill can produce this fine speaker for us.

2. Notice the color of the box.

OG, I've taken another look at both the PDF for the 816VIX, and the 9864A. I see beige woodgrain vinyl mentioned, but I don't see your point. What does that have to do with an X on the end of VI?

I do now see that the 9864A PDF, does not explicitly say it's an 816VIX cabinet. It only lists it in the comparable component chart.

That's a little confusing to name a system after a cabinet...... I'm not staying it's not true though.

9864A = 816VIX + 16" Engine* + 60 x 40 horn

Yes, I understand that..... I have one sitting behind me :-)

*Engine = full-range speaker using shared magnet
Originally developed by Bill Hanuschak at Altec. He added a 515-8GHP woofer to the front of a "pancake" 299 driver.

I understand that too.

Quote:

The pancake was a special order for Yamaha America and never included in the Altec line (although I begged many times).

So Altec made drivers for Yamaha? Do you recall the Yamaha Model number? If it was a special order, I suppose the numbers were small..... just thinking about keeping my eye on Ebay for one/two.

Didn't the pancake design have some problems? ..... something about not enough mass and it resonating? I think we've had discussions on the board here about various "pots".

The Engine was used in the DTS series concert speakers (DTS645-8AF, DTS945-8AF). A 12" version was added (9264A, 9294A, DTS642-8AF, DTS945-8AF). A small-format version was developed (909 driver)and used in the 9850-8A (16"), PS95 (16"), and DTS200 (12").

I have heard of the DTS line, as I have a PDF copy of the late Duplex line brochure. Since I was mainly looking for 9864A info, I didn't read it far enough to know about a 12" version or a small format version. I assumed Bills new 212-8A was a totally new application of the single magnet Duplex.

Ah, that's the PDF I was looking for earlier, but couldn't find.....Thanks.

The Engine that I have, is also a single magnet motor structure. The way the 9864A PDF is written, you have to read it very carefully..... it does not mean the 9864 has a 515-8GHP and a 299 inside. It means that the driver is the equivalent of a 515-8GHP and a 299.

OG, are you saying that the driver, separate from the cabinet, is also not an Engine? .....just as the box is not apart from the driver.

That's something I've wondered about, but figured that it may be something that not even Altec gave much official thought to.

...... So is this just another Altec pro mis info or were the original dual magnet units called Engines too?

That's got to be a mistake because the 9864A does not have a dual magnet structure..... at least not in the sense of 2 magnets, I suppose you could call it a dual magnet structure from the standpoint that the 1 magnet performs dual roles! That would be confusing/misleading, Though.

ALPro and ALT got a LOT of the historical stuff wrong (especially ALT)...when they approached me to help them with their timeline, I declined, and, looking at it, you can see why they need help: it's really messed up!
