I have a friend that was excepted to my school, but cannot get financial aid nor can the parents afford it.This person needs to get emancipated in order to get financial aid but does not want the parents to know because this person has been working so many hours to pay for school and is too proud to tell the parents. The parents feel bad enough,so does not want to add anymore stress on the situation. Now this person is having trouble getting emancipated because he has to have papers signed by the parents..What a crock of shit. Why can't there be a scholarship provided for individuals with brains and willingness that cannot afford these types of honorable goals. What fucking bullshit..But you have the slackers and Neanderthals slipping in and out and not giving a shit..For fuck sakes what is wrong with this picture and the system? Anyone have any thoughts on this matter..This needs to be changed for the sake of the future financial strugglers that want to further their education.SO WRONG!

This person also doesn't qualify for work study either.Even if he did..5$an hr would not help to pay for the books alone, never mind tuition and fees'etc.

my first question would be: how old is this person?
(i'm gonna call him JOHN for the sake of my sanity)
assuming that john lives in the US, i would believe that john is also under the age of 24. if he were over 24, parental acknowledgement is no longer an issue.
so, assuming he is below 24 (and currently i am unaware of his area of interest, i would suggest the following:
1) see if the school offers an option of 'INDEPENDENT' yet still living at home. i know that my school has this program--and it is rarely mentioned (for obvious reasons). for this, one usually has to ask. this takes more than one asking too. sometimes they try to BS students into thinking there is no help. (for some reason)
2) internet, internet, internet
i recommend
fastweb or finaid or fresch. these are great sites. i tried them all when i went hunting. they also have tons of information on additional resources. also, if i remember correctly, one of these sites either has, or will link you to a site where john can enter everything about himself (age, ethnicity, job, religion, etc) and the site does the search and will list any and all appropriate sources of financial aid.
i understand the express NEED of financial aid...ESPECIALLY when parents cannot be of help.
what pisses me off...is knowing that college is more political than educational. remember that. john just needs to know what red tape to cut.
fighting for emancipation is a worthy cause if it would benefit many people. in the meantime, it might also help to try looking at those sites.
(lord knows those sites may give him more help than any political regime he may be up against)
my sincerest best wishes for john.
p.s.-- if i can think of anything else, i shall not hesitate to post again.
