Heartache, tragedies, destruction, death, and the list goes on. Has anyone thought about what this means to you?

I feel lucky to not be touched personally by these terrible things this year but then i feel guilt because i feel lucky. I know so many have lost alot this year. Not just the tsunami or the hurricanes but their fathers as well. I have lost a closeness with some people that I never thought I'd lose. I've lost my place in certain things so to speak. But I have also grown alot. I dont need the same things I used to need and I dont care about the same things I used to either. I think when we settle in our lives and do the day to day routine we end up getting lost somewhere wondering where time went!! But then again I'm happy and enjoying my life more now than I ever have. That means something! I have watched and listened to the losses people around me have suffered and I again tell myself how very blessed I am in my life. I think sometimes we get wrapped up in our problems and forget others. We see our problems as the biggest and the worst, But if we simply open our eyes most of the time we will see..Ours wasnt the biggest or the worst..somtimes its even of our own making. So everyone try and take some time today to look for something good in your life. If you want to post it thats fine but if you dont thats ok too..Just remember to do it. Maybe you will thank me for it later..maybe not

my life is filled with goodness...i have my health my (relative *L*) sanity, a great job that pays well, friends who will always be there for me, a man who loves me more than i sometimes deserve...and even a dog out there who i know loves me more than he can ever express even though we're not together

i can travel (and do *S*), i can share my good fortune with others (and do *S*) and i am fortunate to wake every morning to familiar surroundings, to having my sight, my hearing, my mobility and a functioning, reasoning brain

is there crap...hell yes, but i'm able to see that my crap is relatively insignificant even if it's my HUGE crap *L*...we get dealt and we deal

i've lost over the past 12 months...i lost my father who was my anchor in life and i'll never be the same, i'll never have a 'home' to go back to

it's pretty unsettling to say the least and i still mourn every single day but i know he's with me, i know he's still proud of me

have i grown over the year...hell yes! i'm tougher, less gullible, more careful...and all of these are good things for me to be *S*

chele...great post....i wanted to reply when you put it up here but i'm not my best late at night after a long day...but you did give me food for thought as i fell asleep *S* thank you

I focus on the darker side of reality, sometimes even dwell in it, study it, ripped it down and look at it from all prespectives, so that when i see the brighter side of life, i find my self appriciating a whole lot more. and even take it less for granted.

Nice expression of words peoples.

I am so glad I saw this topic. I needed something like this, especially today.
So, although today is a tough one for me, I am seeing the bright side through all of you.
I feel blessed to know you all, even if it is only through these boards.

Thank you. [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

i waited...
did some real hard thinking...

when i get up in the morning and plant my feet on the floor- the feet that no longer feel the floor, haven't for years, and stand up and don't fall down...i know i have been given another opportunity.
when i can walk to a seat and strap my leg braces on and stand up- and feel whole and right...
when i can talk to 500 other people-kids mostly- and tell them there is HOPE...that they have something but it does NOT have them...that a wheelchair is not the end of the world and everyday is another chance to beat the odds...
to be asked for a frickin autograph...because they got hope or a NEW challenge or...just to be asked to talk one more time- it's the same talk...everytime. DON'T LET WHAT YOU HAVE-HAVE YOU!

to finally hold a dad who never held...in his last hours of struggle...a soldier fighting for his last breath...to ask a higher power to end his war...to look at pillows nearby and think what a mercy thing to do...to not be able to listen to commercials on radio about asthma cause that is the sound Pop made the last 12 hours i held him...to have his head on my chest when he gave it up...to be thankful.

thats what this is about- right? to be able to use some of what he left to help others...even he would never have done...but he did good in the end....and that's good...right?

to be thankful of a meeting with another man who, later, left this world too soon- an honorable and gracious man...a Scotsman who wore a kilt with pride and had "thistle socks" and a great sense of humor of his condition...

to travel back to where i was as a youth in asia.
(don't say that fast...means entirely a different thing)
to help some of ya'll smile-think-cry...i am thankful and thoughtful and humble.

we all have our crosses to bare
and some us insist in having bears to cross-
when i fall down-it gives me time to take inventory...sometimes it's out in the yard and i am acres away from the house and...i take inventory...might as well- not going to be able to get up, maybe, for a little while.
"if it's raining lemons- it's time to make lemonade..."

my inventory is vast- and it's all positive-or it doesn't stay in the inventory.
we can't change anything or anyone but ourselves.

the only secret to being happy is to...

BE happy.

thanks for the chance to talk.
dave

let me explain the 'thistle socks'....

my dad had oral surgery a total of 3 times to try and beat his cancer...in doing so they removed most of his tongue, half his jaw, the inside of his right cheek....and still he talked *big smile* though some words were harder than others

this is how the conversation went:

Craig (my dad): "Anne (my mum's name)where are my thithle thockth"

Anne: "What's that Craig?"

Craig: (louder) "My thithle thockth...where are they?"

Anne: "I can't hear you"

Craig: (LOUDER) "Where the hell are my THITHLE THOCKTH?"

Anne: "Sorry?"

At which point she and her sister cracked up as he stomped downstairs so he could be 'heard'....and laughed right along with them....after that time...they were always referred by everyone as his 'thithle thockth'....by the way these are the woollen knee-high socks worn with a kilt and into which you tuck your sgian dubh

thank you dave....made me teary but you're right, he was a great great man *S*
