BY TURNS reflective and remorseful, Toogood, 25, said the events of Sept. 13 have ?ruined my life. I can?t walk outside, I?m a monster to everybody. ... Maybe it?ll save some other child,? she said. ?Hopefully, somebody will be educated enough to know not to raise a hand to your child.?
Toogood was caught on videotape beating her daughter, Martha, 4, in a Kohl?s department store parking lot in Indiana. Authorities said Toogood left the Kohl?s department store in northern Indiana angry because she was denied a cash refund for two pairs of blue jeans; she denied that the failed refund attempt was connected to the beating.
Earlier, Toogood told reporters she lost her temper because she was having a bad day, and also told reporters Sunday she hit Martha in the head and back and pulled her hair ? but did not punch her.

?JUST LOST MY TEMPER?
On the surveillance videotape of the Sept. 13 incident, which has been televised nationally, Toogood appears to make punching motions toward her daughter, who is mostly hidden within the sport utility vehicle.
?Martha didn?t deserve what she got,? Toogood said. ?I just lost my temper.?
Toogood surrendered to the Mishawaka, Ind., Police Department on Saturday, her hair by then dyed a dark brown. Toogood is blonde in the Sept. 13 videotape.
The girl was placed in foster care when her mother turned herself in to authorities, who said the girl had no visible injuries.
Toogood, who was released on $5,000 bond, told CNN she was ?mortified at what I did to my family, what I did to my husband,? and repeatedly expressed her desire that Martha not be in foster care but should ?go with somebody she knows.? The woman said she thought Martha wouldn?t be happy ?that she can?t feel comfortable with someone else, she don?t have her own blanket, she don?t have none of her own clothes.?
Her attorney, Steven Rosen, agreed. ?It?s understandable that [the child protective agency] wants to err on the side of caution, I believe Madelyne comes from such strong family ties that the best interest of the child would be with a family member.

?Why add to the trauma?? Rosen said to CNN. ?Why add to this child?s estrangement from her family? I thought it was a mistake to place her with a foster family.?

In a previous interview Rosen said he believed the hitting took place because Martha misbehaved in the store, taking toys out of packages and wandering away, prompting store employees to page Toogood twice.
Toogood said she was ?horrified? when she saw the videotaped incident herself.
?I was thinking, I look like a monster,? Toogood said, crying. ?I can?t believe I did that to my little 4-year-old girl.?
Toogood, who said she is an Irish Traveller who currently lives in Mishiwaka but moves from place to place looking for work, reiterated her feelings that her daughter should at least be allowed to live with her husband or another family member.

Work by early Travellers in the United States included horse trading, farm labor and general repairs, according to Katruska, who cites estimates of their numbers in the United States as perhaps as high as 40,000. Work by contemporary Irish Travellers includes roofing, painting, antiques sales, scrap metal dealing and recycling, Katruska found.

on her daughter's reaction after being attacked Toogood suggested to CNN that her daughter is an irrepressible spirit. ?Martha runs everything,? Toogood said. ?She?s extremely loud; even when she talks, she?s loud. She?s extremely smart for a 4-year-old.? After the incident, she said, she told her daughter, ?Sorry, Martha, I shouldn?t have pulled your pigtails.? She was less than friendly to me. She said nothing to me.?
In the earlier interview, Toogood said she hopes to be reunited with her daughter and that she, her daughter, and her husband, John, plan to start parenting classes.
?Anything that they want us to do, we will do,? Toogood said.
Toogood was charged with felony battery to a child, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison. She said her two young sons are staying with family.
She is to be arraigned Monday in Indiana.

She lost her temper...she lost her fucking temper!!!!!!!!!..I simply do not buy her bullshit..What I wouldnt give to have been in that parking lot..and walked by as that happened...just give me 30 seconds...i know that the answer to violence isnt more violence..but some ppl dont deserve more..Why does god allow some ppl to have children..that dont deserve them...and others who would give everything they have just to hold a child..and love it...

The footage of that incident was even shown on news bulletins over here in the UK..and everyone is spot on - she deserves to go to jail, at the very least...

But there is a thought that keeps cropping back into my head... [img]confused.gif[/img]

This happened in broad daylight, outside a busy department store...I find it hard to believe that there were no other people close enough to either see her actions, or to hear her shouting...

And if so..has society deteriorated to the extent that the vast majority of people feel unable to intervene in incidents like this??

She's a Traveller. Most members of that group give themselves the same family names. They're scam artists, doing bad home-repairs, etc. living transient and named alike so it's unlikely you'll meet up with the same person who scammed you again.

Kinda made me think of that woman that drowned her kids..in the lake..ECB..that was in SC wasnt it..what was her name..tonya..tracy..something..anyhow..she went to jail..and yeah..she ended up in solitary because of the beatings she was getting..so maybe..one never knows what will happen....
