stopping messengers "services" did nothing... the XP
firewall, nothing!!!

MeLinda;
Are they coming from Windows Messenger or Messenger Service
Have you ran Ad-Aware or Spybot:
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Then:
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

Scan for viruses online:

What kind of "threats"?
Do you or have you had a Trojan on the computer?
If so it may be time to back-up important data and perform a Clean
Installation.

OK here's the screenshot:

http://www.geocities.com/melspg/porn...?1052191611265

notice where the scroll bar is....if you scroll up there
is more and more porn links....
this comes straight through Windows Messenger and lands on
the bottom task bar.... so you have to click it, to get
rid of it, and they come at you 3 - 4 at a time... like
every 10 minutes.....

i've got both XP and Norton updating, what seems like
twice a week, and i've got the XPs firewall set the way
Microsoft security said to....
and i've got Panicware Pop-up Stopper Pro...

but if i have to get a bunch of other stuff to stop
this.......then.....i guess i'll do it!!

I would advise dumping MSN Messenger all together..
Trillian is the best IM Client that I have ever dealt
with. It will connect to Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and IRC.
It is especially helpful if you have friends that use the
different services! Go to
http://www.trillian.cc/trillian/index.html to download it.

Dwight;
No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...EN-US;Q330904&
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

This will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/

oh! boy! and this is Microsoft Messenger Tech Support:

Unsolicited messages in pop-up dialogs from Messenger Service

Microsoft has investigated reports that individuals are using the Messenger Service in Windows to send unsolicited messages in pop-up dialog boxes to customers. While the messages can be annoying, they do not pose a security risk. The Messenger service that is being used to send these messages is a simple text-only broadcast service that is typically used by network administrators to send alerts to users notifying them of pending service outages, server maintenance, etc. The Messenger Service is not an instant message service like MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger.

You can close the dialog box by clicking OK or the Close button in upper-right corner of the dialog box. Virtually any home internet firewall product will block the messages. Windows XP customers can enable Internet Connection Firewall to block them.

i knew it!! i knew it!!!!
i knew it was gonna be something simple, look what i found---> :

<font color=white>To block messages from everyone who is not on your contact list or on your Allow List:

In the Messenger main window, click the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Privacy tab.
Under My Allow List, click "All others",(highlight "all others") and then click Block.
"All others" moves to your Block list. This forces anyone who wants to send you messages to add you to their own contact list.
</font>

SO FAR!....(knocks on the moniter)... I i havnt received anything ...yet!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

.......hi!.....1QuickSI.....vbs*

i remember ZoneAlarm on my old computer...it bugged the crap out of me... i tried, and ended up deleting all those kind of fire alarms....
every little ping kept ya paranoid that somebody was hacking you......
i aquired Black Ice, and couldnt go anywhere with it.....L*

yep! everything is updated, Norton is automatic ..XP is with my OK.....i got Stopper Pro Panicware...i LOVE it!..its so simple...
in a few minutes ...i'm gonna go get the spy thingy.....

the only thing i have NO clue whatsoever about is......"Largest and most extensive hosts file. Also grab the program Hostess as it will let you manage this file as well as enable/disable on the fly"...
but i'll check it out too...

and Thank You very much 1QuickSI! its a pleasure to see ya......s*

This would be a good topic for the admin board

Things you should run these days!

www.zonealarm.com (if you are running any sort of broad band conenction)

www.lavasoft.de (the best spyware/malware remover)

www.panicware.com (the best pop-up stopper I have found)

http://www.smartin-designs.com/ (Largest and most extensive hosts file. Also grab the program Hostess as it will let you manage this file as well as enable/disable on the fly)

Of course keep your anti-visrus software upto date! Check for updates weekly!!!

Make sure you keep your browser & OS patches up to date.

Set your browsers cache to say 10mb
Remove Windows Messenger service
Windows XP enable the firewall
Over ride your cookie setting for sites that you take an extra measure of security against. Don't forget to allow hostboard.com

And this is just the begining

Anyways always willing to share what I know just stop by the admin forum and ask. My background is over 10 years in the networking field.
