looks like a piece of something.. not a whole insect.
i dont know how much you know about bees mel.. you've never talked about them though.

i got stung by a fuckin bee a few weeks ago.
guess im allergic cuz my hand was the size of a ..well, it was big.
that thing looks possessed though.
i think it pollunated that flower a lil too hard if ya know what i mean!

The Jerusalem cricket or potato bug, is one of the largest insects in southern California, often exceeding two inches (50 mm) in length. It belongs to the Order Orthoptera along with grasshoppers, katydids and true crickets. This cricket relative is actually capable of making a rudimentary sound by rubbing the inner surface of its hind leg against short spines projecting from the side of its abdomen. Because of its large, bald "baby face," it is also known as "CHILD OF THE EARTH" or "?ina de la tierra." Its large size and humanoid head has caused this insect to be the object of superstition and fear by some southwestern and Mexican Indians. Navajo people call it "woh-seh-tsinni," which means "old bald-headed man." Although the strong mandibles can inflict a painful bite, Jerusalem crickets are not poisonous. With their strong legs and jaws, they burrow into the soil and feed primarily on roots and tubers. They may also feed on dead insects and debris, and may be predatory at times. Although they may occasionally chew on potatoes, they are not a serious crop pest like the true potato beetle. Sometimes they come out of the ground at night and wander around houses. These curious insects are harmless and should not be killed. Please allow them to crawl into a container and let them go free in your garden.

mel i actually liked the bee picture.. but it was weird looking.. but looked cool.
and thats not the only reason people are superstitious of that child of the earth thing. Its a true story.. my brother shot one with a bee bee gun.. (k we were kids) and it threw these little black things out of it that moved on its own trying to pull it back together. I've also heard other people say they've seen one half crushed which tried to pull its body back together..
Its a weird bug but i dont think any bug should just be killed. The only spiders i really kill are black widows and brown recluses (if i saw one) still though i think they just want to avoid people killing the bugs. they're ugly though aren't they.. i kinda got shivers at that picture.. in real life they're even uglier.

hey! i didnt know it would even be called a Jerusalem cricket, or even be a cricket!!
the first time i seen 1, i was about 8 years old.... freaked the hell out of me..
i was sitting on the grass and it was walking towards me... i could not figure out what it was!!
and try'n to discribe it to your Mother so that she would believe you, was hopeless...
i wonder why they named it Jerusalem? the sites i was at, all said the samething, not to kill them...
(besides with a bee bee gun) how else could you kill one?? i'd just run from it... [img]confused.gif[/img]

Well i've only seen two in my life but both were clinging on someone's clothes. My brother the first time and another time a friend came into the house.. and had one on him.. he freaked but we made him go outside to shake it off. I didnt want that little bastard in the house.
Whats weird too is that the "chirping" sound they make thats somewhat like a cricket? It sounds nothing like a cricket.. another reason some call it a child of the earth besides the head is the sound it makes. Sounds a little like a cry (so ive heard) ive never heard the actual chirping.
