What is so difficult about directions and giving directions? what is so difficult about saying take the first left over the railroad tracks? does that mean take the first left after the railroad tracks, or does that mean go over the railroad tracks, see the first left, and decide to turn at the stoplight instead?

what about take the first left after you go under the interstate....doesn't that mean just what it says, take the first left after you go under the interstate, no special directions, nothing unusual, just take the first stinking left. am i being completely ignorant to my direction giving abilities, or does that make sense to most people? more specific, do all females have a total inability to follow the most simple directions? what does end of the road mean? does that mean go until you see a stoplight and turn there, or does that mean go until that particular road you are on, no longer has pavement in front of you and you are forced ot turn. for crying out loud....THROW ME A FRIGGIN BONE HERE!!!!!!!!!

First left will always mean first road that leads off the road you are travelling on - be it an intersection, or just a street coming off the road being travelled on.

If it meant first driveway, he'd say 'First house/driveway on the left'.

First left makes perfect sense.

The first left OBVIOUSLY means the first road. As in, turn onto the first road on the left after driving over the train tracks. A bit of common sense usually helps out here.

other than the first possible place to turn left...
albeit a driveway, a road, etc.

thank you guys, and no, it isn't married life, just general information. (it's been going on for over 5 years now)

as for inadequate directions, she said she saw the road, but didn't think that is what i was talking about, so she went until she felt like turning, she thought the first road looked like a shopping center or something....and yes common sense comes into play, because i said take the first left and go to the end of that road. that means turn onto a road, right?

everything is worked out now, so it is all good.

why go the extra mile when referring to driveways
and not be additionally clear when referring to
some phantom left?

i'm not sure why people just can't SAY what they mean
in this case. dj is obviously getting pissy
about a (possibly hypothetical) situation that
could have been prevented/remedied had he been
more direct.

do we want to get technical? the first left, the only place to make a turn at all, unless you want to pull onto the railroad tracks was a road, and i just said, take the first left over the railroad tracks and go to the end of the road, why would that mean turn left into the first parking lot and go to the end of the road. it doesn't make sense, this topic is going to be locked, because you have no basis at all in your argument.
