It was a mistake, all a mistake.

He didn't think so at the time - he'd thought there was a chance, some small chance that perhaps his ends could be served by a betrayal, by eliminating the competition.

He knew his error, but by the time the realization occurred to him it was too late.

He tried anyway, to take it all back, to set things right, but things had progressed beyond that point - the wheels were in motion, the stage was set.

And it was all because he wanted something that was never his to begin with.

It's been ages it seems since then, and everywhere he looks he sees his crime.

Guilt so heavy on his soul that it crushes him with the weight of the world, and all he can see, all he can think of, is a simple kiss that tore the world apart.

He saw it all, one day, in a single moment. Everything all at once - the whole design, from fragile beginning to entropic end.

And it tore his mind apart.

All that remains are fractured pieces, tattered remnants, a shroud pulled over the skeletal remains of his sanity.

There may be times of lucidity. Brief periods when he may remember a time and a man that had been before it all came crashing down.

But mostly, all he sees, over and over again, is that fatal kiss, followed by the walls closing in to crush him.
