HEADS

ok the time has come to change the heads on my drums. they have been on my new drums since i got them.....1 yr ago!

originals are coated ambassadors but i am wondering what clear emperors will be like. im not too keen on the clear ambassadors as they seem a little too open and ringy. i mean, the coated sound lovely and warm.....but im thinking that clear emperors are a happy-medium that will give me a little more attack. is this true?

and while im spending the money.....which is better....remo or evans?? ive only ever had an evans snare head. never tried the regular G series etc.

any thoughts?

I think you're right about the double ply vs ambassador, but from my experience its hard to achieve a full tone from 2ply heads at low volume... So I guess it depends on what type of gigs you'll be doing i.e amplified vs acoustic...

While we're talking heads, anyone using a 16 or 18 kick for music other than Jazz? what heads you using for that?

I like Joel Rosenblatt's solution to the single vs. double ply head dilemma. He puts a single ply on the 10" and double plies on his floors for his 5 piece kit. You can hear what this sounds like on www.joel-rosenblatt.com. Go to the drumming then styles/career section and check out this sound. His floors remind me of the Weckl floor tom sounds from the back-to-basics videos. I'm using this now and I like the articulation of the floor toms and the open sound of the small tom.

I'm using clear G2's on top and clear G1's on the bottom. Best drum sound I've ever had. I don't have a tone problem at low volume levels either. Sounds great played lightly or hard, just my experience though.

I use Aquarian, Jack DeJohnette sig heads on top (black coated single ply) with depending on the gig either a single ply white coated or a single ply clear on the bottom of all toms. Single ply coated on the snare, but sometimes use an underneath dot. Single ply kic head with ring like a Power stroke.

Ya I think it's just a personal choice on what company you go with. Also, I use a 16 inch bass drum for some r+b/funk stuff. I have an Evans Hydraulic head on there.
