Does anyone know the rest of Norton's fb schedule? Also, what do you predict about the Raider's the rest of the season. So far they've been strong, but have only played mediocre teams. imo
9/30 Eastside
10/14 Clintwood
10/21 at Johnson Co. (TN)
10/28 at Union
11/4 Central
My personal prediction? Undefeated regular season if they can defeat Union. That will be the game to see!
I know no District games have been played yet so they got Clintwood, Union and Stink Central, im not sure if they've had an open yet or not.
I think Burton's schedule is about on par with what Most D1 Schools play, I know they played and snuck by Lee, and won vs John Battle. Lee may be 1-3 but they got a hell of stable of running backs, they just can't pass.
Now the Union game will be one to watch, but I don't believe they'll win against the Bears. Eastside, Clintwood, Johnson Co. & Central are going to be wins for Norton, no doubt.
Oh yeah we all know UNION absolutly DESTROYED Lee, They in no way snuck by them. That game was over before it began. At this point I don't think we can count anyone out of the District, because no games have been played yet, and that is after all why you play the game.
After seeing both Burton and Union play I have to say that Union has the better defense, but Burton has the better offense. It should be a close game. Lee should have beat them both, but shoulda, coulda, woulda I guess.
From what i have seen and read Miles is the only thing burton hs as far as everything else You all are the ones that ran over everyone in the district then got up state couldnt seal the deal for the last couple years and as far as numbers go burton had/got their chance to join in with Consolidtion its no ones fault but there own on the numbers part!!!
Maggard is every bit as good as Miles IMO. Also, their QB can throw the ball when he needs to. Burton has a good offense, but their lack of size on defense may be a problem for them against Union.
I respect your opinion but must disagree. I haven't watched the Raiders this year, that I'll admit, but I'm sure they have more than Miles. Riley Maggard is every bit as important in the backfield. Also, J.I. Burton has the best quarterback and passing game in the LPD and perhaps all of Southwest Virginia.
They have 3 backs with 100+ yard games, plus one of the best qb's in the area. And 1) Norton is still in talks with WC and 2) they would be Eastside, so I don't even know how that would "fix their numbers" when they would be part of another school.
And I'm not sure their numbers are that bad, they had 330 kids in 2009 I believe, they picked up some from Appy, so I'd assue it's still over 300 and not barely over 200.
Good lord everyone took what I said completely out of proportion it seems. All I was saying is people make fun of us having a soft schedule but who else can we play, that's my point. It serves us no purpose to play a school 10 times our size other than get destroyed and get people hurt. Being a small school 1 injury can severly impact a season. Why the hell did everyone get their panties in a bunch because of what I said, geez.
Love how people start throwing out you kill everyone around here then can't seal the deal upstate???? News flash, neither Burton nor Clintwood could seal the deal upstate recently.
And whomever said all Burton has is Miles must not have a much of a clue or seen us play. This is one of the more well balanced teams we have had since Jaycob Coleman and Martinez Miles, maybe more so now because we have a good QB. Miles, Dean, and Maggard all average over 10.0 yards per carry and if the Kingsport was right this past friday then we have the Top 3 rushers in SWVA in order. They had them all screwed up so not for sure on that last stat.
Then you add in a nice passing game and we are very balanced. We just haven't had to throw the ball much so far this year. Our defense this year is down compared to the last 5-8 years.
I don't know. I thought they started counting 9-12 but they may still count 8-12. taking into account we graduate about 55 per give or take a couple...... I don't know. I'm sure someone can pull up the numbers.
Not sure why all the hate on Norton but that's fine, comparing football now vs the 90's is pretty much a complete joke anyway. Not really sure what your point was based on my initial statement. My whole point to my statement was why were people making fun of our schedule when most teams on it are twice our size and due to consolidation scheduling this year was very difficult. Not for sure what excuse I was making, I wasn't aware I was making an excuse for anything. We are 5-0
I wasn't making fun of the schedule, but I was defending it. It was someone from the PoundCent area.
In my opinion I agree, Burton should play schools with similar enrollments, like they do (Div. 1). But, with that being said, I would like to see them go out and pick a quality out of district opponent like a radford, george wythe, etc. Just for the simple reason of seeing where they stand against these teams. I think JI Burton is very solid possibly the best team in the "old region d" and would definitely only benefit from a game like that. I would just like to see them tested against someone other than a district opponent. I also realize scheduling is sometimes a problem and doing this isn't always possible.
Strength of schedule means ALOT come playoff time. Look at any state Champion (not runner up) and see who they played outside of there district. using old examples mixed with new ones here, PV- Richlands, Radofrd, Lee, Gatecity. All at that time double A except Radford who was D2 A. Appy- Sulivan north, Gatecity, Daniel Boone, and others. Gatecity- Bluefield, Richlands, Sullivan South, Powell Valley.
Playing up makes your team better when you face eastcoast playoff teams. You have to play quality opponents to get better.
Another example is JJ Kelly. They always played weak teams and never did good because of that reason. JJ Kelly was 5 and 0 a couple years ago when pv went up there and beat them 12 ot 0 but JJ Kelly had beat Ryecove, castlewood, twinsprings, thomas walker, and some small ky school. You play down and beat weak teams you dont learn nothing, you play up and lose close games to good teams you learn how to win in certain situations.
Just my opinion but as mentioned eariler Union has the better D and JIB has the better offense so that says to me that this will be a tight game. Union does have a good solid D and a ball controll offense, which makes it hard for the other team to score when they dont have the ball, but JIB's offense is quick and solid. IMO should be the only game that JIB has left to worry about. Union is one of the best conditioned teams which seems to be helping them more than anything else to win last minute games. JIB is good conditioned too so IMO this will be one good game
For those wondering the numbers for Burton, since 1999 the numbers are:
99)209
00)209
01)211
02)190
03)179
04)194
05)204
06)225
07)245
08)252
09)254
10)269
looks about right to me. like I said we graduate about 55 each year. Went to my nieces graduation at Haysi this year and they graduated about 70. I did not know they were that much bigger than us.
Burton's enrollment for 2011 according to newspaper is 262. Haysi was at 285. Haysi and all dickenson county enrollments have declined in the past ten years. These numbers are grades 9-12.
Yeah, I was totaly shocked when I started counting rows and 10 per row. I counted like 4 times because I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. to be honest it was proabably more along the lines of 66-67. I rounded up as I did with Burton because there are years when the number will be 52 then years when it will be 59.
I believe that was sarcasim bro. I think he was saying back to me, where I said "and Snuck by Lee"... and he was being a smart ass saying the Union / Lee Game was Over before it began, that we DIDN'T sneak by them. Thats the way I took it anyway. Beyond that, Unions team is 10 times better than burton, i'll be suprised if they score at all on our First team. We are much bigger, and stronger than they are, and I think we are faster too. Burtons 2nd Place teams "State Runner Up" teams of the mid 2000's were FAST for around here anyway, they got upstate, and met a team much like they are going to meet when they play us, superior in every aspect of the game.
lol and this is going to be Union's downfall. They are way too cocky already, it's just 5 weeks in, sure by their schedule they'll go undefeated but Norton will give them a scare for sure. Especially if they go into the game not even looking into having to really put forth an effort. There is that slim chance that the Raiders will win, especially with one particular ahs transfer that can knock anyone out and two amazing runners. Props to Union for being such a strong team but if they have the attitude you have, they'll end up getting their rears handed to them in a game they should've won soon enough.
A slim chance the Raiders will beat the Bears? I'd say there is a lot more than a slim chance. should be one heck of a ballgame.
Miles (45-517) and Maggard (38-418) were the next two behind Lee's Graham, Hazlett (62-412) was next, then Dean (28-383). Of course that's just by the few teams that submitted stats to them, not sure if the BHC has had any up. Just from what I can see, I'd say Honaker's Jerod Honaker and Hurley's Tyler Berglowe were up there in the 480 area. Tyler Barker and Lebanon's Crhis Belcher looked to be in the 440-460 area at that time. These all not including this past Friday's games. Tyler Graham still looks to be leading including even this past Friday with 723 yards on 56 carries...through just 3 games. Don't know what Miles had this past week, but Berglowe rushed for 167 (on 13 att.), Honaker had 149 yards.
I work with someone is older than anyone that posts on this board and he is a burton fan goes to about everyone one of burtons games he told a few of us today that he has seen Union/Richlands and for most part all except 2 quarters of a game seeing ll of burton and he said it would surprise him alot if it was as tight of a game as everyone is saying he said he believes burton will not be able to hold up to bears d for one!! O by the way its not us down here at union thats cocky we have a big ol chip on our shoulder everyone and there moms is supose to blow us according to everyone(o its just a conslidated appy and pv they haven't been anything in 10 years they are not going to be much when they combine) SO now that we have come together TEAM and PARENTS bettter than ayone in this county expected and we are proving other wise no we are getting cocky HMMM like some one once said thats why the game is played and well i guess what i'm saying is tit for tat on the morning of 10/29/11 we can get on here and discuss what happens the night of the 28th!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess they didn't teach you about what a "period" is at Appy.
