What kind of monster is your girlfriend?

if the only thing it has going for it is that it's subtitled then I'll give it a miss.
perhaps I'm showing my ignorance (I am) but I would reckon it's a critics favourite? (yawn ...)

Alien Resurrection
Granted, the first half of Delicatesson was finely crafted.
Go and watch Volere! Volare! which probably has far more erotic content and a cartoon character *and* a sound designer! And it's 10 years old, and it has subtitles!!
still, Amelie does seem to have gotten better reviews ...

Hey there.
The Brotherhood Of The Wolf is the best french film Ive ever seen. "In my opinion" Its one of the best flicks this year.
I saw The Man That Wasnt There yesterday and that wasnt too bad either.
Jeez. A french film and a Black and White film in the same week, and I loved them both.
SWEET FOOKIN JESUS. WHAT HAVE I BECOME?
Roll on Armaggedon 2.

You like Alien Resurrection? I can see why your not keen over said film.
Why has everybody concluded that it's a arty farty film just because the film has subtitles.
I don't want to get in to a rant, I was just wondering who else has seen the film.
I've been stomped on for some strange reason.

Hey there.
Who said that?
The Brotherhood Of The Wolf has subtitles, and its about as far as it could possably be from an art film.
Besides. Not all art films are bad. (just most of them)

you didn't offer an appraisal of why you think it's worth anything leaving me the impression that you thought we should be cultured enough darling to know all about it ourselves because we all read the guardian or something
i've spent all sunday watching 5 planet of the apes films -- so fscking what!

I'm not going to write a pretentious 2000 word essay of why you should all go watch it. All I wanted to know was if anybody else out there had seen this film and what did they think, because I?m curious.
You haven?t seen the film nor are you interested in seeing it so why bother even posting.
BTW, Alien Resurrection and Delicatesson were by the same director.
What points on Amelie do you want to share exactly?
Perhaps you could tease people into actually going to see it and broaden their minds instead of creating a vehicle for me start another rant ;-)

I know he made Alien Resurrection, probably for a quick buck.
People have different opinions about films, what makes you think that my personal thoughts on the film will be any better then your friends, the critics. If you don?t want to see it because it?s a critic favourite, or you fill that I'm a twat who is hopping on to a bandwagon Then fear not, don?t go to see it. I saw the trailer a while back, it instantly appealed to me, critic favourite or not. I had remembered the other films Mr. J had done and was guessing I was in for a treat and I was right.
"What points on Amelie do you want to share exactly?" <--- All of it. The film in general, I'm just curious
So for the last time has anybody else seen the said film?

Miker. Sorry I didn't mean to be so shitty.
Miker. Sorry I didn't mean to be so shitty.
To be honest I rarely look at who's made a post, just the content then respond in a manner I find appropriate.
I think (I know) my problem is that I am sort of 'anti-popularist' and I am definitely generally against mediated experiences, which could include film but definitely includes critics and magazine opinions - especially when such publications can be so easily bribed.
You want a Waterstone's Book of The Week? Just make your ?10,000 cheque payable to Waterstones ...
I just wish wish wish people would WAKE UP to how marketing works, and how it skews your version of reality.
In the end, only YOU can form your opinion ... if you can be bothered.
I hate the way car adverts have suddenly embraced extreme sports for example ...

What about subway?
I reckon I could stereotype British cinema in one word.
Subtitles are a legitimate reason for not liking a movie.
Personally I get too much enjoyment out of the way our language is spoken in movies. I don't want to have to read the dialogue.
Thats not to say I won't enjoy the film.
------------------
Hey there.
Your missing out big time mate. Dont you like John Woo or Jakie chan movies. Shit what about Akira Kurosawa. Yojimbo is an awsome movie. If its just the sound of dialog you like maybe you should get into radio.

Hey there.
Chance have you seen La Hain, Nikita Or The brotherHood Of The Wolf. There nothing like what you said. There just great movies that happen to be french.
Spoon Boy I saw AMELIE today. It was good. It looks and sounds very nice. Its well acted and well directed. But is it just me or does the movie have no plot.
The best film of the year so far? I think not. Good but not great.
It wouldnt be in my dvd collection.

It's interesting that Luc Besson now makes movies for the English speaking world. But I still think he makes great films.

28 replies and no one has actually seen this film?? What a load of lazy xenophobes you are!
I saw Amelie and I thought it was wonderful. Granted, I would like to see it again so that I can enjoy it without having to read the subs but it's got so much visual humour you don't need to read them all the time.
I suggest you all go and see it before you clutter up this thread with more of your ramblings.
BTW Les Visiteurs with Jean Reno is a pleasant piece of fluff akin to Blackadder with none of your drug crazed angst. And it's French. But you lot probably didn't see it cos you couldn't get past the subs. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I thought Amelie was great, but it plodded a bit in the middle.
Subtitles? What is your problem?
I think Jean de Florette is great, Antonio's Line , subway and La Haine and a whole host of other french 'subtitled' movies.
I think you are missing out if you dont go to see a film because its subtitled.
Film is a great way of sharing culture, and if you cant put up with Subtitles then you are missing out on some great culture and in my mind dismissing some real cinema treats.
That said I watched Ring 2 (Japanese Horror) the other day and who ever did the subtitles deserves to be thrown off a bridge. White subtitles against a white background for at least a third of the film. It was painful.

hey eddie,
is there going to b love of the dammned screenign soon ?

Hi Chance, thanks for asking.
Its Halloween, two years since part one.
Not this weekend, maybe next weekend. Whenever I can arrange it. Ill send you an invite!
Take it easy

Amelie is a very good film. It's not great but is very good. The opening sequences are about as good as film gets - I thought I was watching the best film I'd ever seen for the first 20 minutes http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif Absolutely wonderful! And definitely one of this year's best.
I think pigeon-holing films by saying 'urgh it's got subtitles' or 'urgh it's French' etc etc is terrible. A good film is a good film and there is a whole world of them out there. One of life's most important messages is to keep an open mind - do so and enjoy.

Quote from Amelie:
A-'Life is a rehearsal for a play that never gets shown'
B-'Thats a good line, you must have stolen it from someone else.'
A-'I have had some original thoughts of my own you know.'
------------------
s'funny, Saw Moulin Rouge the other day too, and that was very similar in pace to Amelie:
The first 20 minutes or so of both were utterly brilliant. Fast furious, making the point left right and centre, utterly watcheable and transfixing, and then both films slowed down, leaving the centre section a bit of a let down, but to sort of pick up toward the end.
Now Id like to see a real film with the style, energy and humour of the beginning of both these movies extended to 90 minutes.
Something like Tetsuo, Body Hammer (Japan Horror) but made with cash and not pocket money.

I'm not missing out because I've seen many of those films. I just don't enjoy them as much as if I could understand the language.
I don't particularly like John Woo's flashy gunfights style but I like a lot of Kong Kong movies that I've seen.
I don't just like the sound of dialogue. I just find it a major part of my movie enjoyment.
And I agree, some people seem to cling to that old stereotype of not liking subtitles = classless philistine. Its funny.
------------------
I think Amelie's most endearing and enduring quality is Amelie herself. Most guys would like her for a girlfriend, most girls might want to be her friend. That makes the movie fun to watch, and she has those full wide eyes you can dive into.
Something else about the movie, the way events unfold was for the most part fun. It seemed as if the easiest tasks took great effort to achieve, and that again, created a light, giggily feel among the audience as we watched the movie.
Perhaps this is one of those movies that works well off of the audience that is watching it, yet it probably makes a good stay at home DVD date kind of a movie.
I personally think she could have done better in her choice of mates.
Ive yet to see his earlier french works, but Leon is one of my fave movies of all time. Almost wept last time i watched it.
As for the subtitle thing, i dont think it detracts if the film is good enough. If the film is average then its just another reason not to get into it and enjoy it.
Does anyone else think Woo's movies are totaly over rated? I do
This thread is amazingly odd. I didn't know that Woo's movies were well thought of anyway.
Yes, I too was surprised at the "divergent" nature of it.
