That would be me looking for one. I've emailed the seller about the cabinet...... I absolutely hate it when sellers decide for me what I want to buy and what I don't. I assume that they don't want to ship by freight or maybe don't know how, but they apparently never stopped to think that I might be close enough to do a pickup! It about 4 hours, but even with the price of gas, I'd rather do that then have to build a cabinet.
Hopefully it works out- keep us posted.
Just saw it and felt a heads up was in order.
man...i hope you get it! and at a great price!
May as well get everything cabinet and drivers.
Less of a headache that way.
................
I just heard back from the seller..... the cabinet is gone. I returned with an email explaining that when making decisions for buyers they are limiting their market. I also suggested that they could have stated that the cabinet was pickup only, even if they were willing to ship the components. Furthermore, I told them that I had been looking for a 9864, and would have been willing to drive the 4 hours to their store. Now, I may bid, but not the amount that I would have for an intact 9864.
I'm upset/frustrated about their decision of tossing the cabinet. I did my best to convey my disgust by explaining how they short changed themselves business wise, rather than telling them how I really feel.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I understand your disappointment, but ragging the seller about it won't retrieve the cab, and is likely to get the components thrown loose in an oversized box if you win the auction. Sometimes it's best to play it where it lies.Quote:

Looks like Lebanon is only 13k. If the cab was ditched last week, it might still be in the system (or a pawnshop). Perhaps the only fringe g-men get is 1st pick...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No it won't, but hopefully it'll help them decide not to do it again, if it's clear that they lost easy money. Easy..... because of no packing at all, and higher dollars.Quote:

I think they are some sort of Antique/pawn shop..... although I just read that they do run consignments too. I suppose that may mean that they aren't the ones that trashed the cabinet...... that would be great, after I lectured them. Sometimes, I just can't win.... I don't say anything and wish I had.... or I say something and wish I hadn't!
Yeah, the dump, and all points in between. Big items like that don't usually go straight to the landfill. As uncommon as those boxes are, if I had the gas (and a 9864 needing a mate), I'd probably be dumpster diving Monday with a possivle layover till things open Tues. While you're there, drop by Steve's and find out if he's blowing wind up our skirts or not. http://www.hostboard.com/forums/
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">My first thought would be the burn pile rather than the dump, but I suppose a business would opt for the dumpster.Quote:

They sold the 816VI box as a stand alone cabinet, too - I sold a lot of them...
This is not the engine but a true Duplex consisting of a 515 8GHP 200 watts AES with a 299
HF driver at 75 watts AES.
I want one. http://www.hostboard.com/forums/

Convergence- the original "Engine" was built from the duplex. Yes Bill's new one is different.
Bill I believe now owns "Engine" as a trademark. So whatever speakers Bill designs and applies the trademark to will be Engines.
Convergence- please go to Altec Pro, which is still up, and read this:
1993: The 9864 ENGINE loudspeaker is introduced, with a revolutionary dual-magnet structure high output Duplex? speaker component loaded into a bass horn cabinet. This speaker is the ideal choice for Houses of Worship and Auditoriums, and soon becomes Altec's best selling speaker system. The 9800-series "beige" speaker family is introduced.
Altec sure seemed to think the 9864 was an "Engine"
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">From the Altec literature I've seen, Altec referred to the Engine as a Duplex. I'd call the Engine an evolution/progression of the Duplex (604) design, but I fully realize that I'm splitting hairs here.Quote:

CONVERGENCE- my Engine, Bills original design, not his new one, uses only one magnet. It is not a 604 type setup, with a large format HF driver...... that would be absolutely huge!

Not the last ferrite ones, which would be the proper time-context analog. http://www.hostboard.com/forums/ http://www.hostboard.com/forums/

2. Notice the color of the box.
816VIX =
cabinet only. Ready to mount any 16" Altec woofer. Includes connector plate, metal grille, and threaded suspension points
816VI = 816VIX + 515-8GHP
9864A = 816VIX + 16" Engine* + 60 x 40 horn
9894A = 816VIX + 16" Engine + 90 x 40 horn
Duplex(R) = any coaxial speaker made by Altec
*Engine = full-range speaker using shared magnet
Originally developed by Bill Hanuschak at Altec. He added a 515-8GHP woofer to the front of a "pancake" 299 driver. The pancake was a special order for Yamaha America and never included in the Altec line (although I begged many times). The Engine was used in the DTS series concert speakers (DTS645-8AF, DTS945-8AF). A 12" version was added (9264A, 9294A, DTS642-8AF, DTS945-8AF). A small-format version was developed (909 driver)and used in the 9850-8A (16"), PS95 (16"), and DTS200 (12").
No .
Engine has to do with the box type which is a 816VIX
The units in those are true 2 separate drivers but with a 1.4 inch HF driver.
Not to be confused with the 212 8A which uses a common magnet for both drivers.

Th 816 engine is a Duplex.
Saying the 816 box is the engine is ridiculous- the 816 wasn't called the engine without the Duplex. That box was offered with different speakers.
BILL OWNS THE name Engine. He can call a 9 volt battery the Engine if he wants.
The Bottom Line is that box with the Duplex was the original Engine. There were several more Engines, all Duplex based.
You have a tendency to read two lines of type and post it as the whole truth- it is much more than that.
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL ENGINE. Get your facts straight.

Dear OG,
We redesigned the 816 with dual vents to make it pretty for the 9864A and 9894A. We added a grille, suspension points and a special mounting bracket. Later I needed a well controlled low frequency assembly to support the VIR and VIT horns (I was the marketing manager that brought the VI series to market). The 98xxA cabinet was perfect! I proposed the first loaded 816 offered by Altec and we called it "816VI" to tie it to the VI horns.
One more time, the "Engine" was the component used in the speakers listed on my last note. The definition of an "Engine" is a single shared magnet. All Altec coaxial speakers (8" to 16")are called Duplex(R). The large "Engine" was never offered as a componet. The small "Engine" was offered as a 15" ceiling speaker (model 950-8A, the 950-8B was an EV copy with the HF driver on the back ala 604).
Although Bill H. developed the original "Engine", the latest version was developed by the fiends at Altec Lansing Technologies. I was part of the team that developed it. The CD1012-8A (ceiling speaker) is Bill's design ("Engine" with 299 HF) with a sweet little horn and crossover by Charlie Hughes. We are all very lucky that Bill can produce this fine speaker for us.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">OG, I've taken another look at both the PDF for the 816VIX, and the 9864A. I see beige woodgrain vinyl mentioned, but I don't see your point. What does that have to do with an X on the end of VI?Quote:

I do now see that the 9864A PDF, does not explicitly say it's an 816VIX cabinet. It only lists it in the comparable component chart.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's a little confusing to name a system after a cabinet...... I'm not staying it's not true though.Quote:

Didn't the pancake design have some problems? ..... something about not enough mass and it resonating? I think we've had discussions on the board here about various "pots".
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I have heard of the DTS line, as I have a PDF copy of the late Duplex line brochure. Since I was mainly looking for 9864A info, I didn't read it far enough to know about a 12" version or a small format version. The Engine that I have, is also a single magnet motor structure. The way the 9864A PDF is written, you have to read it very carefully..... it does not mean the 9864 has a 515-8GHP and a 299 inside. It means that the driver is the equivalent of a 515-8GHP and a 299.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">OG, are you saying that the driver, separate from the cabinet, is also not an Engine? .....just as the box is not apart from the driver.Quote:

That's something I've wondered about, but figured that it may be something that not even Altec gave much official thought to.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's got to be a mistake because the 9864A does not have a dual magnet structure..... at least not in the sense of 2 magnets, I suppose you could call it a dual magnet structure from the standpoint that the 1 magnet performs dual roles! That would be confusing/misleading, Though.Quote:

ALPro and ALT got a LOT of the historical stuff wrong (especially ALT)...when they approached me to help them with their timeline, I declined, and, looking at it, you can see why they need help: it's really messed up!
