Who will win and why?
I think RC should come away with this win. TS's defense is just not big or athletic enough to stop Berry. Honaker could barely keep him in check. RC also has a stouter defense than TS and they are a whole lot more disciplined. I would take RC by a couple TDs. Of course I have heard Rye Cove played terrible against St. Paul, RC will hafta come out with their "A" game against TS and if they do, they should come away with the win and steal the playoff spot from Haysi.
I would say Rye Cove would "earn" a playoff berth with a win over Twin Springs, not "steal" the playoff berth from Haysi. Considering that a playoff berth is something Haysi never had in the first place, it honestly couldn't be considered "stealing".
Haysi would win the Cumberland every year and if RC played in any other district in Region D, they would never make the playoffs.
Ouch that hurt my peelings.
The same could be said for several teams that play in Region D if they were in the Black Diamond as well. Rye Cove didn't want to be Division 2, that was a VHSL decision and they (Rye Cove) did take exception to the ruling. What are they supposed to do, give the playoff birth to Haysi because people on internet messageboards think that they shouldn't be in the playoffs? They should be back in Division 1 were they belong next year. If Haysi would have had a more competitive schedule this season, it could have been Gate City sitting at home this year instead of the Red Tigers of Haysi. All fingers should point at the Haysi AD or whoever does the scheduling for football. Maybe if they were to schedule more programs that are Division 2 or above they could be in the running for a wildcard berth into the playoffs. Look at their schedule...after the first 4 games, Haysi has 6 Division 1 opponents & only one of those currently has a winning record (Twin Valley at 5-4, a team they defeated 57-0). I realize Hurley and Twin Valley are district opponents, but how about Castlewood, Pound, Jenkins (KY) & Ervinton? Good lord! What average to above average Division 2 team couldn't defeat those opponents?
Maybe they (Haysi's AD/coaching staff) should worry more about cleaning up their own back yard (BDD and scheduling stronger opponents) and less about others (Rye Cove) getting the job done in their own (Cumberland District).
Still, it's not stealing a playoff birth, it's earning one. You can't steal something that wasn't in someone's possession in the first place.

Schedules are made with 2 year contracts so what was scheduled two years ago are the same games played this year so you are trying to judge how teams are going to be almost 3 years in advance. In southwest virginia because of isolation especially at a school like haysi travel concerns always play a factor in scheduling opponents. Scheduling an LPD school for haysi is tough because the LPD schools have 7 district games and most teams have rivals they like to play such as Powell Valley/Lee High or would rather play a Double AA school to improve their Power Points. Haysi used to play Norton which was a good game but was dropped by Norton. When Haysi picked up Pound it was in their State-Runner up season. Haysi always plays ervinton which is a county game and Castlewood was a playoff team last year. The Closest AA school for Haysi is Grundy a school Haysi can't compete with year in and year out making it better for them to schedule a Single A school who is going to win a few ballgames and they will get a few more power points. The next closest AA school is about 2 hours or more away from Haysi. On a bus it takes Haysi 45 minutes to an hour to get on a 4 lane something many people assume is a given. so there are many financial considerations to take into account when scheduling teams. plus teams have to want to play haysi as well. why would a school want to travel an hour and a half to play haysi when they can play the same caliber team 45 minutes away?
Honaker and Haysi's non district schedules are both jokes. Its a good thing Honaker is gettin some Div. 3 and Div. 4 schools, all of which are closer than all of our current non district teams anyway.
I don't like the arguement you made for the Ervington game. The same used to be said for Grundy continuing to play Twin Valley, even though TV was getting thumped badly. Neither team got anything out of the game, except maybe a good gate when the game was played at Grundy.
Haysi should drop Ervington, it doesn't help them against tougher opponents.
However, I do understand the situation Haysi is in. However, I am sure there are alternatives to playing Jenkins (any other KY team would be a better match). I do think keeping East Ridge should happen because ER should have a good football team within the next 2-3 years (even with high AA numbers, 3/4 of the kids never played organized football).
If they ever build that Coalfields Expressway through Buchanan and Dickenson Counties, I'm sure they will have more options opened to them in all sports as far as scheduling teams. Does Dickenson County even have a four-lane highway running through it? Buchanan County has 460, but good lord, you can't do above 50 MPH most of the way between Raven and Vansant 'cause of all the curves!

The BDD is such a strong district in every sport... I'd say they are the strongest in the state in every sport.... [img]graemlins/broken_heart.gif[/img]
We go threw this same thing year after year since we were moved to div-2.After this year maybe Haysi,Clintwood will now have their chance to get in the playoffs and lets say they did this year PV would beat them bad because who have the played other than the cove and honaker that are both in the playoffs.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes, intelligence-challenged. There are 5 other teams in the CD, three of which could give Haysi all they want just about any year. Why doesn't Haysi schedule more CD opponents...or better yet, try to get into the CD??Quote:

Why is it intelligence-challenged to say Haysi would win the CD in football every year? They have beaten the top team in the CD (RC) for years now. All I was trying to say was, Haysi was more deserving than Rye Cove to make the playoffs.
Haysi would be more deserving of RC to get into the play-offs ONLY if they had won the BDD AND had a better record than RC. RC did what they had to do to get there, so deal with it. Haysi should have taken care of business and won the BDD.
Then we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Three other teams in the CD that could give Haysi all they wanted? Like who? Haysi already plays Ervinton, Castlewood, and Rye Cove. They also used to play Twin Springs. Haysi scheduling Cumberland teams is one of the reasons they won't get a wild card spot. That was why Honaker didn't get a wild card spot last year, if Honaker hadn't dropped Grayson County and Rural Retreat and picked up St. Paul and Twin Springs in their stead, we woulda made the playoffs over Powell Valley last year. The points system rewards teams for strenght of schedule, so lets see, most of Haysi and Honaker's non-districts schedules last year and this year were Cumberland teams, and neither team fared well in the Region D, Div. 2 rankings. All those "strong" Cumberland schools we play sure do help our power ranking all right.
On another interesting note, Honaker and Haysi are 15-0 against Cumberland foes the past 2 years, beating them by a combined score of 615-128. Thats giving us all we want all right!! Why is Honaker dropping Rye Cove, St. Paul, and Castlewood(well they dropped US) and picking up Richlands, VA High, and Abingdon? Could it be that the Cumberland has gotten so tough we have to resort to scheduling two Div. 4 schools and a Div. 3 school? No, its so we will no longer go 8-2 and be 3rd freakin seed in the playoffs. Why didn't the strength of the Cumberland give us the rider points to propell us to that Number #1 seed in the playoffs?

So next year should not be a problem for either of you. Both of you should make the playoffs without waiting until game -10 to see if you get in. Good luck against Gate-City.How many games a team wins means nothing unless they play someone. Are you saying we did not deserve to be in after we played with you this year?Bottom line we have been a thorn in the side of three schools in two years. One you, Haysi and Clintwood all these teams wer good enough in my opinion but to say rc stole a playff spot is not right and you know that,That is not fair to these seniors.
I don't think it was right for RC to be put in D2 anyway. RC could probably have been playing for a Regional title this year and last year, but the VH$L kinda put a side track on all that. Well good luck against PV this year. RC has a good team, Berry is a heck of a player, and hopefully he can help get it done against PV.
Thanks we still got our eyes set on a regional.May not happen but who knows we might be playing you again.Burton put up 30 points on gc great d friday and actually lead some of the game with only around 200 students now that tells me crazy things do happen from time to time.Who would thought tenn would lose two qb in the same year.Personally i thik all these teams should be in and keep playing until you get down to two.
Hey, I wasn't bragging about the BDD being anything special. I've even said several times on this board I don't even really like the BDD that much cause its so weak. You guys started this spittin' contest by going on about how undeserving RC is. Fact of the matter is, we like being Div 2 about as much as Kerry enjoyed being number 2 after the vote. Again, quit crying about us...we were in control of our own destiny, just as you were, and we took care of business when it counted. You should have done the same.
I don't think we are complaining about the fact of who took care of business because Haysi didn't. We are talking about how Honaker and Haysi could win the Cumberland every year so the Cove and the Cumberland isn't as wonderful as everyone tries to convince themselves
How can you say that both of you would win the CD every year?So what good did it do you?It just kills you all to say congrats dont it.
Not a very good average though.
In 2001, Honaker had one of its worst seasons in years. We went 4-6 losing to Rural Retreat, Grayson Co., Lebanon, Haysi, Rye Cove, and Appalachia. As I recall, in 2001, RC had one of its best teams in a while. Wow, RC has beaten us once in like 6 years. Congrats.
This was just to the post that said you could win the CD every year. I was just stating that in some years you would not. I was not disrespecting Honaker or Haysi in any way.
In some years Haysi might not win but Honaker will. In other years Honaker might not win but Haysi will. Have Rye Cove ever beat Honaker and Haysi in the same year? If not then technically one of us would win the CD every year.
I understand what you are saying, I wasn't knocking RC, the point I was trying to make was Haysi is more deserving than RC to make it because Haysi would be more competitive. I mean, look at how bad Haysi beat RC. I mean, I think RC has a good team, they played a good game against Honaker, but Honaker didn't exactly play its best game all year that night either. At least next year, RC will be D1 again, so hopefully this won't come up. The same thing is going on in Region C this year. You can't honestly say Grayson Co. deserves to be in the playoffs over George Wythe. Grayson Co. is probably one of the worst D2 teams in Region C, and play in the worst district in Region C. They were absolutely destroyed be their out of district opponents in the regular season. But of course like Honaker last year, and Haysi this year, if GW had played a tougher out of district schedule they would have made the playoffs. There is no excuse for a good team like GW to play Fort Chiswell, Grayson Co. and to a certain extent this year, Radford, even though they are just having a down year.
You have not owned us every year. I cannot remember the year but I believe it was 98 or 99 we beat Haysi and in 2001 I believe we beat Honaker.

2001 RC 27 Honaker 0. I know this is in the past but I just wanted to let you know that the BDD is no stronger than the CD.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No, what everyone was talking about was how undeserving RC was to be in the Regionals. Kind of like saying Pittsburg would be more deserving to be in the play-offs with a 11-5 record and a fourth place AFC Northern divison finish than say Tennessee with an 8-8 record, but who ended up as AFC Southern division champs. The fact of the matter is, this is how it is set up. You can't say one team is more deserving of another when the system is set up to reward those who win their district, however weak or strong that district may be.Quote:

Um, 1st off, Dickenson County schools can't afford to have Athletic Directors so the Principals have to do our scheduling along with all the other stuff that happens in the day of a principal. Also, Haysi has to schedule 4 or 5 new teams next year after being dropped by several teams.
Oh and another thing, in about 4 years Haysi will be no more anyway. You will be talking about Dickenson High School or whatever they choose to call it. Having the talent from Clintwood and Haysi should be a great team. I can't wait for the change.
Htf how can you say that you guys didnt play your best that night against the Cove that is a smack in face and you know that.I am reall suprised you would say that.As i was leaving that night from the game, spoke to some of the fans from Honaker and wished them good luck in the playoffs and their reply was we thought you all were going to come back and tie the ballgame.
Our offense just couldn't get going all night long. IMHO opinion, we just didn't play as well as we did against Haysi and Lebanon.
Yeah, defense will sometimes do that to ya.
Let me try and make a statement without it hurting anyone's feelings. Now let us think logically, how many people does it take to start on a basketball team? The answer is five. Now how many people does it take to start on a football team? The answer is 11. Ok if i have 300+ to pick my 5 out of or 200+ to pick my 5 out of there is a difference but hey i only need to get a good solid 5 maybe 7 if you want a good bench. On the other hand if i have 300+ and need 11 or so football players and some good reserves or i have 200+ and need 11 players how much more do my chances increase of having great skilled players. Look at it like this it is a lot easier to get a good football team when you have more to choose from. Now without shooting your mouth off, think about what was just posted. Every team in the cumberland is 200 or below. Didn't someone post that if haysi was in it they'd win it every year of course they would or at least should they have more to choose from, that is why there are divisions in football and no other sports it is harder to get a solid 11 man roster, that is why the advantages to the larger schools, in basketball you only need five, that is why cumberland schools and smaller LPD and BDD schools can compete and often win the region. Now as far as schedules and 2 year contracts. Both coaches of these to BDD schools new how the new rating scale would work, you schedule a Division 1 team you will lose points even if you beat them. I know for a fact the Grundy is not that far of a haul for either school, and Grundy would love to play them. I also know that when Kevin saunders was at J.J.Kelly he tried to pick both of them up, even said for them to just name a date, and neither would pick up kelly. So don't use contracts on this one, i've heard it said many times that Coach Colley would travel 2 hours for an easy win, than 45 minutes for a tough game or loss. Now before you shoot your mouth about this one sit down and look at the distance from Grundy to Jenkins, or Jenkins to Wise etc.
I think all this talk is water under the bridge. We are better than or we should have or this or that. bottom line is what the VHSL SAYS GOES.
Haysi played J.J. Kelly for 2 years in 1999 and 2000. When has Haysi traveled 2 hours to play anyone?? Beside Pocy, which was in district, Thomas Walker, which was only played for one two year stretch, and Patrick Henry which dropped Haysi. I said in an earlier post that is doesn't do Haysi any good to play grundy they can get more points by beating a 4 win Division 1 school than losing to an 8 win Grundy team. Haysi can't compete with Grundy year in and year out. You said it yourself small schools can't win year in and year out against bigger schools. As long as the classifications are the way they are Haysi's best chance to make the playoffs is to win the district and they didn't get that done this year. Plain and simple.
Haysi has tried to schedule Grundy before but with the way our games are set up Haysi or Grundy can never fit the game in. The Cove said that we have 300 or so people and its easier to get 11 players out of 300 people than 200. While this is true did you not stop to think about Gate City and how many more kids they have?
What does GC got to do with this subject.I wish these teams could get in because they deserve to with that kind of record. We all agree the VHSL is on some kind of drugs. to put RC the smallest div-1 school in the state, in div-2 they have to be crazy.
