I talked to Vampira last night. She wants to let everyone know that her computer crashed and burned a while ago which is why she hasn't been posting or replying to any e-mails. She is in the process of getting a new one and will be back as soon as she can.
In the meantime, she asks that people refrain from e-mailing her as she will never be able to read the backlog when she finally gets back on-line.
Other than that, she sounds great.
Hope you all enjoyed the holiday.

I've also been wondering about Bmat. She didn't reply when asked where she's been so long. I wonder if she had a crash too?

Hi Absom,
BMAT is a moderator at 2 different boards so she probably just hasn't had time to post much on Hostboard and at CZ. When I log on at home, I see her pop up on ICQ sometimes, so she is out there somewhere. Unfortunately, I've had so little time when I log on at home, so I haven't had the opportunity to talk to her and see how she's doin'.

Oooo...speaking of new computers, I just found an ad for a Compaq 1.2 Gig Pentium III system with 128 MB SD Ram, a 60 GIG harddrive, a CD-RW and a DVD drive a 17 inch GEM monitor, Windows ME (gag) and a color printer and scanner thrown in.
The whole thing is $899.
I'm thinking this sounds like a good deal. Anyone else have an opinion?

Sounds like a good price, Polly. Read the fine print, though (like I need to tell you that!). Some of them come with a two-year contract with an ISP that you pay on a monthly basis. Otherwise, it's another $500.00 or some such thing.

Good advice, Wizz, but this one says quite specifically "no rebates required." I'll have to check it out personally, but I think the consumer protection laws would require they say something in the ad if this were one of those nasty things with the Compuserve rebate. As near as I can tell, it is saying you don't even have to mail in your receipts to get a little "bundle" rebate or anything like that.
I do want to check to make sure these aren't boxes that fell off the back of a truck. In other words, I want to lake sure they come with a decent warranty still in effect. And that there is at least a little software already loaded.
But thanks for your input on the price. It certainly sounds like a good deal.

Polly,
Knowing where you live (you can run but you can't hide, kiddo ) I would say the price is not bad. Not a give-away, but the prices of systems are down this summer.
I've been pricing computer systems this summer because my gonna-be-ex-husband wanted my advice on what to buy for him and our son. I have looked at all the ads in the paper, visited some of the well-known vendors and even checked out some bargain basement sites.
So, if the specs you listed are what you want in a computer, go for it. It's definitely a fair price.
(btw, the gonna-be-ex did finally get a computer but ignored my advice re: processor chip so I'm off the hook on that one :-D )
