Don't be stupid LOL since the Pinkstons started 9th grade at PV they could live in outer mongola and it would be legal to play for PV.
The rules I have posted were for TRANSFERING which is what The kid is TRYING to do.
Now if the kids mother lives in Norton AND the kid is going to be liveing with her then the VHSL will have NO PROBLEM with it......However everything I had been hearing was the kid would be liveing with people OTHER than his mother OR father which the VHSL WILL have a problem with

What about this situation?
But, considering he has lived with his grandmother for years and now decides to go live with his mother they do have a fight against the VHSL ruling because that is his legal guardian. In doing that that would not make the other brother not able to play since he has been established since the 9th grade.

I am not sure how old he is, close to turning 18 though, if he is not already. The point I am trying to make is will the VHSL try to push this knowing the circumstances?I can almost assure you that they wil not touch it, they will leave it up to the coach.Jimbo has let him practice, does anyone know if he played this past Friday?

Re: Pinkston
There has to be a change in residence to change schools according to the rules. If mother lived in Norton and had legal custody when he entered school at PV, then seems to me he would have to move to PV attendance zone and then back to Norton, if that makes sense.
That would be the same if my son had started the 9th grade at PV while living in Wise. He couldn't just transfer back to Kelly and become eligible immediately.
-
Re: Pinkston
Unless you change residence you have to sit a year, and he doesnt have one to sit.

From what I understand, it's a whole lot tougher for custody change to come into play, since he would no longer be a juvenile. It couldn't be ruled on in juvenile court.

I don't believe age is even in the consideration for eligibility.

Re: Pinkston
From the understanding in talking to Mr Pinkston his Uncle and cousins during and after the game here is what's going on. Yes he lived with his Grandmother in BSG for many years and His Mother never gave up her Parental rights, just let them live with her mother in BSG while she lives in Norton. Whatever happened happened in Big Stone Gap that's where that stays.
He, his Mother and family came to a family understanding in that his Mother is giving up her parental right's to her Brother who has already petitioned the court's for legal guardianship of Mr. Pinkston and this was when he moved to Norton. This would be standard per the courts as his Uncle would be his court appointed Guardian and he has to change residences from one town to another to live with his court appointed Guardian because he is a minor, which makes him eligible in guidlines set forth in prior VHSL rulings in their handbook and the past.

Only if grandmaw moves, same reason you can't move to JIB without sitting out and play. The way it used to worded, whoever the kid lived with had to move.

As far as "second" chances, well what ever happened to standing up and taking responsibility for your actions, paying for what you do, and honestly I don't see that that has happened yet. This young man had an excellent chance at DB only a short time ago and completely BLEW IT. DB football program and playing for them could have advanced his efforts to better himself and continue his "sports career", getting him attention and notice from some pretty big name colleges, but now the most attention this young man will get is right here on this forum. That says quite a bit to me, but then what do I know? I am just a parent trying to teach a son to take responsibility for his actions and try to make good choices both on and off the field. </div></div>
First off, his "chance" at DB was never a go and he never "blew" it over there. Their coach called Phil Robbins and Phil told him what was going on and he never gave him a shot, so NO he didn't blow it over there. Know what the hell you are talking about before spouting off at the mouth.
Also, step off your high horse sweety because I doubt your son is a saint either so just take a step back and chill out. </div></div>
No high horse here my dear. And well I know from an assistant coach at DB what went down in the office over there, so don't presume you know everything. Like my information, yours is also hearsay as neither of us were there. And as far as my son goes I know for a fact he is far from being a Saint, however I make every effort to ensure he is not involved in certain acts and well if he had broken the rules that WERE broken his playing would be in no one's hands but my own. My non saintly son must pay for every wrong choice he makes, and must work very hard for what he gets, he knows that he must follow the rules and do the right thing, does he always do this? NO!! But he knows there is a price to pay when he doesn't. I am looking at this from a Parent's point of view, something you fail to see, if you had a child and you were trying to teach him or her that for every thing you do there are and will be results for those actions. It's about saying to a kid, no matter how gifted athletically, that if you engage in activities on a regular basis that you know are wrong and you fail to go by the rules you will be punished for those actions. This situation only tells him that if you fail at one school then shop around until you find someone who will take you.
We are not talking about something that happened last year and he missed a year of playing and did his time. Were that the case I would be the first person to say give it a chance and see what he can do to improve and see how well he learned from his mistakes. We ARE talking about something that happened recently and you can not stop years and years of behavior in a matter of weeks.
So coming off my high horse now what I am saying (for the 100th time) is sports should NOT be a consideration at this point. It should be about getting this young man's life together and making sure his behavior changes and the ONLY way this is ever going to happen is for him to finally see that he (or anyone else) can not break "the rules" in this manner and not be held accountable for it. Take some time dear to look at this situation from a parents point of view rather than a fans.

Re: Pinkston
This kid needs something to be a part of right now. The more time he has to do nothing, the more he will get deeper into whatever problem it is that he may have. I'd say it's a pretty good bet that he isn't getting the guidance he needs at home.
Just giving an example, maybe things have changed more than I thought in the past 10 years or so. Though when I was in high school it seemed like far more than half of the kids who didn't play sports were developing bad habits in their free time. That was few and far between with the kids who actually played. Might have something to do about being a part of something, being on a team... maybe having people around you who cares about you. Maybe those other young men who have been there playing will set an example, offer their friendship. I'd say it's safe to say there aren't many saints in the halls of the high schools anywhere you will go. Kids and young adults do stupid things, some learn from their mistakes, other repeat them throughout their lives. There has obviously been something that's been missing from this kids life. Some sort of guidance, and authority. He's obviously not gonna get that by sitting at house, because if he was going to we wouldn't be talking about this. I'd say theres a pretty good chance he's going to be surrounding himself with good people within that football program.
So let the kid play, how can a bunch of people who don't know the whole story know what's best for this kid. They don't, and the bottom line is most here has another agenda. Let's think about the kid before we think about W's and L's of the team you root for.

AMEN, LET IT DIE. I can't believe that this has gone on this long and nobody put a stop to it 1. BECAUSE HE IS UNDER 18 AND 2. HE IS A HIGH SCHOOL KID.
Honestly, you mods and admins let things go too far sometimes.

Re: Pinkston
Bring out the brooms and sweep it under the carpet . No wonder many kids these days know nothing of personel responsibility , choices and consequences . I don't see age as having any bearing . I don't even agree w/ papers withholding names of juveniles that commit crimes . Put that laundry out for all to see , maybe then someone might just give xtra thought before doing something illegal or stupid . I'm not even referencing the Pinkston kid this is all generalities . I have no clue what he did and don't really care but that's just my take .

On this board under-18s are talked about constantly... they're practically treated like celebrities. I didn't realize the rule was "only say nicey things about the kiddies"
The convo is relavent to the major topic of the school season - LPD football (& eligibility).
Those who don't like it - just move on to your next topic of choice. Not a big deal. He hasn't been convicted of any crime in the forum jury here.

Re: Pinkston
What you fail to realize is that this young man has been a part of sports his entire life. Since he was old enough to play. It was not enough before to keep him out of trouble, what is so special about Norton? Do you honestly think a few months at Burton can save this young man? Telling him, we won't think about what you have done at another school, you just work hard here and it will all be forgotten. What happens when he gets into trouble again? Who will step in and rescue him then? And why do some feel as if this young man is being bashed? It's about hoping that someone steps in and makes him realize that he is accountable for what he does. Sweeping it under the rug will only send the wrong message I don't care if Burton's whole season depended on this young man, it does NOTHING about teaching him right from wrong. It's like when a celebrity gets caught drunk driving and is sentenced to community service and no jail time, they are all sorry for getting caught, but could care less about being sorry for what they have done until some hard nosed judge puts them in jail. When they get out it's suddenly the best thing that could have happened and it saved their lives. I am just surprised that most of the concern is over his playing and not over the real problems that brought him to this point.

Seriously, you all never cease to amaze me at how quick most of you are to judge people, even children. Wit the exeption of a handful of you all that are commenting on this kid, none of you have any children at all. What if it was YOUR kid being crucified on here? I never once said I agreed with what he did or is doing, just that he is a kid. What if it was a kid playing p-nut football and was a heck-of-a ballplayer and he did something like what this kid was supposed to do? Would you still "crucify" him in the same way? Let the authorities deal with him and not us. NSSB, if he was your kid, would you be sitting still letting this board do this to one of your own. What about you elp? Or what about you lung? No, he is NOT a public figure as someone stated above. He is a private individual, not elected to any office nor is he being paid to play ball. I think that none of you would sit still one minute for something like this. What you all are saying and doing to this kid is just as criminal(morally) as what this kid was supposed to have done. What difference does it make how old he is?

Re: Pinkston
I am glad this place wasn't around when I was in high school. 50% of just about every team in this area would not have a team if they gave drug test to these boys every week. And any parent out there who thinks their kid is just going to hang out on weekends after games needs a wakeup call. Give a drug test to these kids on Saturday or Sunday morning and see how many suit up the following weekend. A lot of people would be in for a rude awakening.
-
Re: Pinkston
And that is sad IMO. Its too bad random testing is done across the state.

Re: Pinkston
What is the difference between this kid and the others that Norton have accepted and allowed to play through the boys home in Norton that is shut down? Those boys had been in trouble, tossed from home to home and finally, through the courts, appointed to the Victory Boys Home. Those children, much like Mr. Pinkston had been into some trouble, but many of them participated in football at Burton whether they were good or not. No one ever questioned Jimbo for taking those young men into his program and trying to help them become better students and men! I attend church with one of the house parents that used to work there and he sung not only the praises of Jimbo, but Mr. Scott Keith and the entire Burton faculty for their abilities to handle these children. I think we all must remember that the men and women in our educational systems SHOULD be in their positions due to their love of shaping the lives of children and educating them to become productive members of our society. Why should such educators (some of which are coaches) turn their backs on kids, espically those that need help the most?

Re: Pinkston

First off, I haven't said a mother [censored] thing about the kid. I could care less what he does; rape goats, sale drugs, mug little old ladies, I could give a rats ass. If it were my kid and he had been a [censored] up his whole life, he's open to the criticism he gets. Let him have it. You make your bed, you lie in, and you face the concequences. If anything is said about my kid that's untrue, I'd defend him. If people are saying things that are the truth about him, what the hell am I supposed to say about it as a parent? "Oh please, I know he's a complete screw up but lets coddle him and act like nothing happened.". To hell with that, that's why none of these kids have any respect, can't stay out of trouble, and make complete asses of themselves like 99% of the high school kids that log onto this board. Parents need to start beating some ass and these delinquents will have this behavior curbed before they reach 18 and start doing things that sports, the "coddle technique", or any of this other bullshit will fix. Now, none of what I said is addressed toward the person this thread is related to as have none of the other posts I've made in it have. I don't know the situation, I don't care about the situation, and I could care less. The whole sweep it under the rug and lets act like nothing happen defense is horseshit though. I'm sure you didn't raise DJ or your kids like that and I'm sure if he were a screwup you'd break those habits. People feeling the same way about another kid is no different.
-
Re: Pinkston
...and by the way, I could care less if he plays for JIB, PV, CW or whoever. I said to start with, he's not going to make a difference for JIB to beat Clintwood or PV this year. He's not that kind of players. If you want to put him on a team he'd make a big difference with, send him to Ervinton. They've got 13, another body would do them well. Or let him play at Norton. It's no skin off my ass and I could care less. If he plays, I hope he's healthy, he has fun, and he's successful.
-
Re: Pinkston
I'm not saying a word about the kid - I know zilch about him or the situation. Nothing wrong with playing a little devil's advocate. I just think it's a double standard to talk about the under-18s day in and day out but when someone thinks the talk isn't nice it's time to stop talking about the minor.

Hey Lung, do you pick PV over Burton this year? I may have just misunderstood what you said but it seems like that's what you were implying with that quote. (If it's not, my mistake.)
I know that only one 'true' game has been played at this point, but it just seems like Burton could be the stronger team this season. I don't see PV winning it this year, but I could be wrong. I think that when I watch PV take on Lebanon this Friday I'll be able to better judge the teams (even if I haven't really seen Burton).
