Phill robbins was raised on the wing T but 7 state championships later the I formation proved to be the winning formula. Tom Turner would utilize his players. When Travis Clark was the running back they ran alot of I formation. When Josh Mabe was QB they ran alot of the I formation. you have to utilize your players to win championships simple as that. Union needs to be more open with the game plans Jumbo set T stacks too many in the box to run up the gut. If you dont believe me play ncaa 2012 and try it hahaha

I agree with that. I think seeing Travis try to live and die with the I or anything other than the T is like trying to teach a pig to walk on it's hind legs.

Appy ran very little I with Mabe or Clark. Maybe once every 200 plays.

That's what I thought as well.

they sure didnt Jumbo set t formation with them did they. Every time i played appy (99 00 01 and 02) plus when i watched Travis Clark run they ran more I than once every 200 plays.

I played them in 94 and they ran nothing but the T.

At times Tom tinkered with other formations, sometimes quite a bit. One year they ran a lot of stuff out of a sort of power I set with a pair of 300+ pound twins in the backfield. It was not designed to spread anybody out though :)

Travis is a very young and very inexperienced coach. It's my feeling that he is also going to be a very good coach. Nobody needs to be too critical of him, he is learning on the job I'm sure. IMO he has made some mistakes but not nearly as many as you would expect a coach that young and that inexperienced to make. He has also done some things very, very well and I think given time he will establish himself as a top tier high school coach.

I agree with this. Let's be honest, he has made quite a few mistakes this year. The time management issues HAVE to be addressed and fixed going forward and the lack of offensive diversity will kill them against better teams. But Turner is a very young guy taking over the most storied program this side of Hampton after all this consolidation mess, all at his FIRST head coaching job.

My biggest complaint (other than clock management) has been the offensive sets and playcalling. He is not taking advantage of all his players' strengths. The T is GREAT for Barker, it fits his style. But Davis is a quicker, more athletic back with more speed. Run some I or single back, run some sweeps and tosses, let Davis get outside and use his athletic ability.

That was the Meyers twins in 94. He'd hand them the ball and it was impossible to stop them. When it was the Travis's though, it was almost always the T.

Turner was qb in 94. Clark played some corner and halfback that year. The "I" I can recall was two power backs , one lined up a step closer to the LOS than the fullback. In the time I watched Tom coach, there was very few I plays, most of them in the last year or two. I really don't see what the gripe is, when Appy had the kids to run it, Tom ran a spread or shotgun several times a game. The trick is , most people don't see enough of practice to have an idea of what can be run. The last state game, I heard people talking about what they would have done to stop that offense, Tom was possibly the best coach around and if Appy had the kids to run the 3-4 and the dime and the 10 other schemes named, he would have gone to it.The T gets you to the line quicker and you don't have to hold a block as long, it's balanced -you don't have a weak and strong side. Going away from getting across the LOS and hitting someone is what has disappointed me the most in PV and Appy the last couple of years.
