This is a post off of the dickenson county discussion board that I thought some of you Wise Countians might find interesting.
Wise Co has sex with bulldog, and dont get kissed

I would say the Bulldog nuts in APPy got Wise County's virginity but they were screwed already by one of my old College professor's at UVAwise when they convinced the Wise Co Board of supervisiors to build a landfill they it would take 4 counties to operate on any kind of rational scale. But they wouldnt let anyone else use it cause the hippys convinced them it would open the conty to out of state trash. Even though the State supreme court said they couldnt stop it anyway. Funny no one cared or even tried to bring trash in and it was just a fear tatic to break the county and waste money and force a tax increase.
No comes the Appy Pound and St Paul narrow minded people living in their small town mentality with small minds and adversion to change, who want their schools but want the entire rest of the county to pay for them. So Wise county aint got a cherry anymore. The landfill kooks already got it. But this time they got it in the rear from a Bulldog, a Wildcat and a Deacon.. OH my kinky baby.....Hello tax increase .. glad I dont live in Wise County today. Makes Us look like smart people here for sending trash out and not having to pay for the Bulldogs bills.

I am assuming that you are prbbly from sin city. Probbly married to your wife & sister @ the same time . only problem is its only one girl.As far as appy people being simple minded I would ask you to look @ the state of va sol scores. all three schools that were to be closed down are at the top of the state . fact no B>S. What this county needs is a few more a$$ holes like yourself to cause even more disturbances. Keep that stuff over in your corrupted complex.

Just adds to what i been saying. So who screwed us? Looks like some in DC need to take care of their county also.
I notice how many on here are from DC yet, talk all the WC politics. Can't vote here. Don't live here, but gonna tell us how we need to run our county. Look at theirs. And there is a hitch to the item your talking about. Your trucks are weighed in. And bills will be going out. Not to dumb. Just stupid for trying to help out other local counties. Who well use us?

Also from that website.
You have to admire their spunk. Let's hope their example will embolden Dickenson County's citizens

You are right to heck with all the studies and the brand new state of the art HS with all those fancy AP classes that would be 95% paid for by the federal government we need to stick to our guns and save our schools crumbling and understaffed they may be we can always fix them up(of course the county tax payers would be footing 100% of that bill) change is bad and scary we don't need any of that here we need to follow the lead of Appy the model of progress
FYI the Bashum plan was total Crap (Moving Appy students into PV, Pound into Wise, and St Paul into Coeburn and doing renovations on these schools at night) if the plan had been to build three new HS and consolidate into them I think Most of Wise Co would be singing a different tune
From what I have been told Wise Co propety taxes will have to almost doubble over the next 7 or 8 years if the plan is to keep everything as is

I think the writer hit the nail on the head with that paragraph. Like Wise County, Dickenson County's communities are built around our schools, and most people are proud of their schools. Tearing down the schools is tantamount to admitting that our towns are dead and have no future.

Wise County's creed is 'Be True to Your School'

Times-News
If Wise County is in the market for an official song, the good folks up there couldn't find one more fitting than the old Beach Boys' tune "Be True to Your School." Over the years, I've been privileged to know many Wise Countians, and all of them are fiercely proud of their school, be it Appalachia, Powell Valley, Coeburn, St. Paul, Pound or Kelly. (Burton graduates are a proud and loyal lot as well, but their school isn't part of the county system. So no offense intended to all the Raider alumni.)
What brings all this to mind is the public reaction to Superintendent Michael Basham's bombshell - delivered via press release last Wednesday - that he planned to recommend closing Appalachia, Pound and St. Paul high schools in a bid to cut costs, increase efficiency and expand the range of available academic courses. Rumors, conjectures and conspiracy theories about possible school closings have been circulating for years, but even so, Basham's comments - following closely on the heels of an independent study of the school district's operation - took most people by surprise.
Most, but not all. Two days before Basham went public with his intentions, some residents of St. Paul and Appalachia had filed a bill of complaint in circuit court in an effort to ward off any attempt at consolidation.
Nevertheless, by Wednesday evening, other upset citizens, including various town officials, were quickly mobilizing. On Thursday county supervisors unanimously passed a resolution against school consolidation. And on Friday Basham announced - again by press release - that he had changed his mind and would make no other proposals in the future to close any schools. The Wise County School War lasted all of two days.
Even so, it's inevitable that the county's schools (like every system) will face some restructuring sooner or later. Plenty of empty schools in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia stand as proof that changes in population and economics lead to changes in the delivery of education. Indeed every school district is organized to meet the demographic needs of a particular time, and it simply stands to reason that a system based on the realities of yesterday might not be suitable for the realities of today.
Changing a school system is an emotional and frequently painful process. Closing a school is worse because it sends the dispiriting and unpleasant message to the affected area that the place has no future. And no one wants to accept that verdict about his community.
In a perfect world, such wrenching decisions would be made solely on the basis of common sense and economics, not politics. It's quite remarkable that in his initial press release Basham went to great lengths to explain the reasoning behind his recommendation, yet at the first sounds of public opposition, he folded up like a card table. If he wasn't willing to make even a token effort to defend his decision, well, what does that say about the value or importance of his proposal? You can bet Wise residents are asking the same thing.
It does seem a bit strange to me that a place no larger than Wise County has six high schools (not counting Burton). Especially when you consider that Lee County has only two and Scott County gets by with three. Even Sullivan County makes do with a mere four.
However, if Wise County residents want to keep the doors of all six schools open for the foreseeable future, and they're willing to pay for them, then their wishes should be honored. Their schools, their money, their call. What could be simpler? Perhaps those of us over here in Sullivan, where the school closure issue seems like a bad drama that won't end, could take a lesson from the folks in Wise.

You know i may be one thing. But im not two faced. How many more on here can say that? Thanks for the link burrhead. Opened a lot of eyes i think. That many not are being as open and honest as they should be.
We know what problems we have in WC. Some in DC. You seem to just be scratching the surface with your problems.
And it seems many now are questioning your on consolidation? Hmm wonder why?
I like how some try to play both sides.
But you know. Watch full metal jacket. The part where the DI says you wouldn't even have the well just watch it.
All i can say. Clean up your mess first before you correct us here in WC.
