Re: EXECUTION!!!!!!
[ QUOTE ]
I'm anti death penalty in most cases too. But:
The actual translation from the Greek is "Thou shall not murder" not "Thou shall not kill".
Saddam had been responsible for the deaths of at least one million plus people. Among his favorite past-times and that of his sons was to watch women being raped and tortured while their husbands and or children were forced to watch too. He also like to record these events for his entertainment later as well.
He HAD to be executed and here's why. He had tortured and killed members of most every Iraqi family's grandparents generation, of their parents generation, of their generation, and of their children's generation. It was like he was a living Satan to these people. Remember that he was in jail awaiting execution not long before he took over the country in the first place.
If there is ever to be any kind of stability in Iraq he had to be executed, otherwise a very large portion of their population would live in fear of his return and act accordingly.

I agree completely with one exception. I am in favor of capitol punishment.

Re: EXECUTION!!!!!!
I'm against the death penalty for one reason. Without a doubt we have put innocent people to death. By some reasonable estimates up to 3 to 5% of those executed (even .5% is too high). In my opinion we do far more harm to justice with one faulty execution than a thousand correct ones does in favor of justice. Your system is broken or at least cracked and until we can be sure that everyone we put to death is guilty then I'll be anti death penalty.

I don't agree with your position, but I do respect it.

Re: EXECUTION!!!!!!
I have skimmed through most of this, trying to hit the peoples post I respect the most on this.
I am not seeing a great celebration for Saddam's hanging across the US. Mainly Iraqi refugees who are now American citizens who faced, or had family who faced Saddam's brutality. That said, there is more celebration in Iraq for his death than in the US.
Yes there probably will be a slight increase in US casualties for a week or so because of this. Let's remember that the Sunni's are actually a minority in Iraq, compared to the Shiites, and Kurds. That is part of the reason that there is more celebration, than condemnation for this.
I too am for capital punishment, especially in cases such as this. I do not find it cruel or unusual, as it has been used for centuries to hang someone.

Re: EXECUTION!!!!!!
Yes you have heard me say it has it's flaws.
However there is cases that don't leave much of the truth to look for.
Saddam in his beginning was a good man. Power destroyed him and led him to be a ruthless killer of anyone who opposed him.
Our system has it's flaws.
And no i don't think the hanging of Saddam helped anything. Except those who got relief from seeing him hanged. Those who maybe he tortured.
Taking a life is never good. But in some cases it is all that is left that can be taken to rewrite the wrong, that was done. Yes that sounds harsh. But how else do you seek justice.
We still live under some versions of the old testament even in our justice system. An eye for an eye.
I know what your saying in someways. But no one here as i see it is having a big party over Saddam being hanged for his crimes against humanity.
Most are more worried about our troops and what repercussions this will bring to them.
We have flaws in our system. It needs some work.
But i think in this case. It did work. A man who tortured and killed, raged wars etc. was given a sentence that our system uses.
The man's guilt was proven daily by his own actions and words. In the end. Those who sought justice got it. It may seem harsh, but that was kind of reaping what you sow.
He murdered and killed and executed people for any cause. In the end. Maybe it come back to him.

Re: EXECUTION!!!!!!
I am not celebrating over this. I haven't seen all that much celebration on here anyway.
That being said, justice was served. He only had himself to blame. I hate that it had to happen. But then again I hate more that he destroyed lives.
Sometimes there's just no other way to serve justice than capital punishment.
He's no longer hurting people anymore.

True- but then again he wouldn't be hurting anyone locked away for the rest of his life.

Re: EXECUTION!!!!!!
John 8:44 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." (KJV)

He was in prison awaiting execution just before he took control of power the first time. Over a million people were murdered and many millions tortured and raped because he wasn't executed quickly enough that time.
Even if a repeat of history is unlikely the people of Iraq who lived through those terrible decades would be unable to rest not knowing if it could happen again.
