??? Who in there right mind would pay $12,000 - $15,000 for an acre or striped land...... Land must be ALOT higher over there in Wise Co

Re: CONSOLIDATION
Scott's like that too...land is high as the sky right now...

Re: CONSOLIDATION
Price of land in western PA is far more than $5K an acre
You might be able to find some that price but that would be rare
http://www.realtor.com/search/search...d=28495&typ=20 (very reliable site used by MLS subscribing realty companies)
examples of random acreage:
$9,000 for 0.17 Acres in Franklin PA
$159,900 for 1.8 Acres in same area as above
$9,900 for 0.5 Acres in Meadville PA
$15,500 0.69 Acres in same area as above
$37,500 for 1 Acres in Hayfield PA
For Wise County I found these prices:
"4.038 acres located on Alt 58 just outside of Coeburn, recently surveyed, public water is available..................$8,000" ($1981 per acre)
"26.058 acres, level and cleared, previously the old Coeburn Dragstrip, recently surveyed, public water is available .........$59,900 " ($2303 per acre)
"25.5 acres of prime real estate located just minutes from Big Stone Gap. Property is level and joins the Powell River. $98,000" ($3920 per acre)

Re: CONSOLIDATION
I found farm land in Lee Co for under $4000 an acre
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
And under $5000 an Acre in Scott Co (This one is wooded so not exactly ready to move right in)

Re: CONSOLIDATION
new buildings will help the learning environment
i can only speak on PV, and its been four years since ive been in the school, but when its hot outside, esp for a big guy like me, learing is bout impossible. the labs are disgusting, not enough computer access, shitty outdoor trailer rooms where the floor is falling in, math classes in a field house(maybe thats phil tho haha), etc....

Re: CONSOLIDATION
Has anyone calculated the savings of consolidating from a stand point of the energy cost savings from modern facilities through heating & cooling? Does anyone know what the counties budgets are yearly for maintenance for the schools in question? I bet just the maintenance budgets alone over a 10yr period would cover the cost of a new school.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
It has all been studied to death. The savings aren't that much. You will now pay to cool the schools and aren't at this time. The ball now rests with the folks that own the property and must fund the building.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
I had a chance to meet the new superintendent this week and talk with him briefly.
I think he's going to be good for the county if he stays. I think he understands the area and the challenges.
If/when consolidation takes place, there are many different scenarios that could play out. I've heard many people talk about transferring their kids to different schools to avoid sending them to a consolidated school. At this point, it's all speculation.

Please. I mean, we need to consolidate. Plain and simple, and some person gets on here with no real solution as to why cons. should NOT happen other than I GOT DAWG PRIDE BOOYYYZZ. *headdesk* Mark Hutchinson is not going to save you, sorry but he won't and can't. How is consolidation going to benefit every school board member????????

Re: CONSOLIDATION
You can do the West Wise, East Wise, North Wise high school concept if consolidation takes place or you could name the high schools for the areas in which they are located, or after famous Wise County or Virginia figures.
Dry Fork High School Mountaineers (Coeburn and St. Paul)
Roaring Branch High School Miners (Powell Valley and Appalachia)
Indian Creek High School Hilltoppers (J.J. Kelly and Pound)
or famous people:
Junius Griffin High School Trailblazers (after the man who grew up in Stonega and went on to work with Motown and Martin Luther King)
Henry Wise High School Governors (after the governor the county was named after)
F.G. Powers High School Diamondbacks (after the name of the squadron that Powers served in)
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
maybe its just my opinion, but all those names sound pretty shitty to me
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
I say we name em after Rocky movies...I,II,and III...
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Apollo Creed High School or Clubber Lang High School....both sound pretty good.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Did they even name the Russian in part 4?...Oh yeah Ivan Drago..lol..not that he needed a name tho. Back then we were trained to see the communist as evil..So it's be the same as Rocky fighting an Arab nowdays regardless of his name..lol
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
How about this name for a consolidated school the Dominion High School Mega Watts (Coeburn and St. Paul) ha ha ha
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
The mascot could be a protester with their arm in barrels...
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Maybe that teacher from Coeburn who got arrested up there could be the mascot.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
i actually would like dominion jigga watts. 1.21 jigga watts

I actually like those ideas. All of them would basically call for a new set of colors for each combined school (no fighting between people for old pre-consolidation colors to stay), and it pays homage to important historical figures from the area. I'm not wild about the Governors or Trailblazers mascots, but I think those could be tweaked and still be good. I really like that FG Powers HS Diamondbacks nickname though--it's unique for a HS team to have the Diamondbacks as a mascot.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
From someone who monitors every day and seldom posts.
An idea pitched more than 20 years ago before political districts got scrambled up and numbered instead of named.
Appy-PV: Richmond Rams (Carolina Blue/Gold-Yellow/White) - UCLA colors
Pound-Kelly: Gladeville Gladiators (Scarlet Red/Black/White) - Atlanta Falcons colors
St. Paul-Coeburn: Lipps Lions (Blue/Purple stripes/White) - Minnesota Vikings/Jacksonville Jags morph
Seriously, improved EDUCATION opportunities are the number one concern.
Sports builds community and character.
Remember the Titans???
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
I look for the Appy-PV school to be the coalminers or miners. It makes sense because of all the mines in that area. I'd like to see one of the schools be the Enforcers, due to the prisons in the area. That would be a good one for Wise-Pound. And for St. Paul-Coeburn maybe go with something in reference to the new power plant. I will admit that I do like the 1.21 jigga watt mascot idea mentioned by dogfacegremlin.
As far as using compass points (Wise North, West, and East), that would be fine. Or using famous/important people from the community. Maybe one of them could be M. Basham High School since he is one of the ones that got the consolidation ball rolling. Hope that last one didn't offend no one.

Ahhhhh, they were speaking of consolidation ages ago, long when Dr. Branham was still there in the early 80's.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
You are correct, it first started in the early to mid eighties. I thing they should name the schools
1. Thompson-Cornett High
2. Perry High
3. Mullins-Bates High

haha
I don't think so, not everyone is fans of these people.
Though Thompson has supported Appy forever, most people see him as a dirty hippy, I remember when he was at Appy Elem. a lot of parents were never fully happy with him.
I'm not bagging on him, I'm just using this as an example.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
He was always like that, I grew up with him in Derby. As far as the school names I mentioned, they were meant for sarcasm, although I do support consolidation.
BTW, my Dad taught him how to play a quitar.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Who is Dr. Branham?? I've missed something through the years.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
It's Dr. Basham, and he was the superintendent when this whole consolidation issue surfaced.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
I think he meant Dr. Jim Graham!
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Basham wasn't here in the 80's,,, but Graham was. And the last interim 'Super' was Larry Joe Hill, b/f the current PERRY.. I still think Hill would have been the logical choice prior to hiring Basham. Hill was second in command when Graham was 'super'.

Re: CONSOLIDATION
What does everyone think about the board's latest legal troubles? The paper says paying someone for consulting without bidding the job may be against the law? Doesn't seem as if we get anything quite right.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
And as much trouble as this has been , one school has to be the Warriors.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
The school system has an attorney on the payroll. Surely, they would have consulted him before paying off Dr. Killough. I don't think he should have been given any money. Wonder how much consulting he has done???
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
I think the attorney was the one complaining about this.

Got a link?

Re: CONSOLIDATION
No, I never can get the coalfield on-line to work. Story is on page 3 of 10/21/08 edition. "Attorney questions superintendent buy-out."
O'Donnell told both boards that no one has ever stated what kind of consulting Killough was supposed to do. O'Donnell said services of consultants would require ads to be run and bids to be taken. That is what I got from the story. Another 60 grand gone?
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
School Boards attorney is Scott Mullins. O'Donnell is a lawyer from St. Paul. If the School Board messed up, wonder if O'Donnell is going to do anything about it?
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
I didn't get that much from the story- and didn't get if the guy was the board's att. I would think the county would just cut the payments and end the problem. But that is ALL probably way to easy for politics. With that kind of blunder it might be time for some new advice.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
Build a new school in Appalachia, Pound & St.Paul and see how many people from BSG, Wise, & Coeburn go for that.
-
Re: CONSOLIDATION
you are retarded. it is not going to be in wise coeburn and pv. they will be neutral locations. why not read the post before you jump into a convo because this has been discussed a lot
