Wow! Great thread. A quantum leap in my super8 knowledge.
So if the notch on the left is missing the 85 filter will be switched out of the optics regardless of the position of the filter switch. This is the case with both my Elmo 612S-XL and my Kodak XL340. But my Minolta Autopak-8 D6 does not have the sensing pin for the left notch so on that camera the presence/absence of the notch does not affect the presence/absence of the 85 filter.
On all three cameras there is only a sensor pin switch for detecting the right notch. Slow films like K-40 depress the pin. Faster films like 200T have a wider notch and do not depress the pin. I.e., there is no provision for measuring the width of the notch, just detecting whether it exceeds a certain width. In all three cameras the light meter is, in all likelyhood, set for either ASA 40 or ASA 160, i.e., the cameras were designed for either K-40 or Ektachrome 160.
