My dad got me a second hand dv camera. However I want to edit shorts on my computer but my camera doesn't have a firewire connection. I've heard about a widget you can get to resolve this. (My camera's actually quite new, damn forgot the model no) Has anyone actually had this problem?

Hi Ribena,

I'm afraid if your camera doesn't have a firewire connection then a widget won't help you. A widget enables the DV-in on cameras that have Firewire connections but cannot record through them.

Whether or not you can record through the analogue connections depends on the camera.

OK well I've checked my camera (model jvc dvx) and it has a connection that says dc-in not dv-in is there a difference?

Ps my camera came with a video capture docking station which I think is used for comp editing though I've tried without success. Can that be used for the same purpose?

The DC-in socket is a power socket, used for connecting your camera to a mains electricity socket (via the camera's battery charger).

Ok so I've checked and I have a jvc gr-dvxe which is so unbelieveably crap of a camera but still I have a camera and that's that. But what I would like to know if you could is can I still do editing on pc, but not through a firewire. I guess it would involve a far inferior progam than say premiere. Or would I have to get a dv vcr and do linear editing. Or am I fucked?

Don't panic, you can still do non-linear editing. You just need an analogue capture card instead of a firewire one. Pinnacle's DC10 or DC30 would be fine, and the DC30 comes with Adobe Premiere. Your camera MUST have analogue audio/video output (the sockets you use to connect it to a regular VCR) - you can connect to an analogue capture card in just the same way and record your footage onto your PC for use with Premiere etc.

~For anyone reading:

you can do non-linear edit from any video source, even if it takes some setting up.

I edit security camera footage, which is captured on a time-lapse VCR, and the preps I've done for court have been done simply by capturing in Premiere. Then you can add on effects (such as lighting part of the frame that is relevant to the incident)

It's all do-able.

Thanks for the offer xendar, but my dad owns a computer shop which means that I'm pretty much set up with the equipment and thanks for the advice, I was freaking out for a moment.
