On Directing Film - David Mamet -Practical and no nonsense all round book, not much nitty gritty detail but good and down to earth.
Directing Shot by Shot - Steven Katz -Excellent for visualising the moods and creating a visual atmosphere and timing.
The Unkindest Cut - Joe Queenan - funny and warm and brilliantly cynical.
Rebel Without a Crew - Robert Rodriguez - motivational
American Cinematographers Manual - lenses, film speeds, cameras, charts, lights....
I cant remember the name but the Sidney Lumet book - Dont let the actors rule, good tips about saving time and money during setups, by getting your actors to ACT.
The first 2 are probably the most useful.
