I am making a short film, an unoriginal piece of monster movie crap, but with the fear factor from the horror classic Halloween.
I was just wondering what makes you squirm or jump when watching a good horror film.
Thanks

What makes me squirm in a film -
Seeing any of my relatives.
You don't want gruesome stuff if you can help it. In low budget films that kind of thing looks naff - eg re-animator
The best thing is to build up the tension. Jaws, Alien and Psycho all do this.
Cheers

(tossing 2 pennies into the forum...)
For me, its the sounds, not the visuals, that really create a creepy vibe. A subtle pulse of a heartbeat, the squealing sound of metal on metal, fingernails being dragged along a chalk board, etc. I don't know if you play a lot of video games, but a lot of first-person-shooters have all kinds of ambient noise running in the background that build the aura a suspense and danger. You may want to borrow ideas from them.
Also, I always enjoy a movie more when they don't reveal the killer/monster right away. Implied violence (the blood pooring down the drain in classis shower scene in Psycho) and "monster-cam" (the shark's POV in Jaws) are classic tools that allow the filmmaker to force an audience to use their imagination to fill in the gaps. The images in the audience member's head are more personalized for that individual, and thus are usually scarier than anything a director can put together.

I bet your scared of NOT replying to every single post on this message board... lying awake at night, just thinking about how this forum will cope without you for a couple of hours... or something like that?

Thanks for your 2 pennies,
As a reply, i don't plan to show any horror or gore, and i don't plan to show the creature at all, there will be hints of what it is, but the monster/thing won't be on screen in any shape or form.
The plan was to use a score, camera perspectives and camera angles to show the suspense and horror, but not actually show any suspense or horror.
It will be suspense and a whole lot of squirming until the end, where the creature, monster/thing pounces (shot from the creature POV, of course)
I was just wondering what other elements scare you, make you squirm, jump, scream, shout, cry to mommy .etc
