I was just wondering, what exactly is a Experimental film. How do you define what is experimental?

This is just my definition:

One of the FIRST films of a director.

A movie that a director experiments his skills on.

An amatur attempt at movie making. Experimenting in other words.

I soppose the rank EXPERIMENTAL movie, is pretty self-explanetory.

Theoretically, those are good definitions...experiment thus means trying something new, right?

but the term has become adopted more so to cover films that are "differnt". Advant-garde, perhaps.

For instance, the 30th movie by some person could be dubbed "Experimental" for lack of a better word to describe it.

Some of my favorite music...Fugazi...their newer stuff could be titled that of an experimental vein, but that doesn't mean they are amateurs. Take a listen...

see something like Begotten (merhidge), Timecode (figgis) or Loss of Sexual Innocence (also figgis).

Those will give you visual definition of experimental.

Experimental film usually does not comply with traditional narrative structures. A cinema of freedom, perhaps.

When I hear the word EXPERIMENTAL, it makes me think of over exposed footage, wierd costumes, different dark collors. ANything out of the ordinary I guess is experimental. If anyone has seen a music video called "LOOSER" or "BEERCAN" both by the god of music BECK (who I'm going to see tommorow, these videos are the most experimental videos ever. These videos are trully in every essence of the word, EXPERIMENTAL.

'experimental' means that the filmmakers are trying something they've never tried before.
I'd say that Bruce Willis being in 12 Monkeys and the 5th Element was experimental.
(he had never done Sci Fi before)
An experimental film is one where you learn something whilst making it. It might even be experimenting with the audience and learning never to try that again.
It might be experimenting with narrative structure, with colours, with sounds, with editing techniques, with unusual roles for actors, with departing from your usual storylines (like Speilburg making Private Ryan).
It might just be a kid with a Hi8 camcorder filming a bike race with the gain up. Could be anything.
I dont think the label 'experimental' should be reserved for arty weird films. Although they often are experimental, they arent the only ones.

i thought begotten was ok, but yes it is a little too long but a good example of an experimental movie.

also some to see, Lain (anime series) and anything else by Alexandro Jodorowsky [holy mountain, sante sagre, el topo]

Begotten is a horrible movie. It is the most pretension piece of garbage I have ever seen. Had it been 10 minutes long it would have been fine, but no it had to be 77. And you couldn't tell what the hell was going on. It looked like ghosts in a snow storm.

theres the hero.. and hes after the Masters of the Desert or something, but then hes killed. then hes brought back to life.. yeah its weird
