Blushda

I wonder if steve or anyone else that can do the blushda can help me out here.

I've been practising it for a few weeks now, and I can get a reasonable speed on it, but nowhere near as fast as steve's on his demo clip. I have 2 questions about it:

Firstly, the grace note of the flam seems to end up being the same volume as the double stroke played, so that all strokes on the right hand are the same volume, kind of like ghost notes when played faster. Is that correct, cos I'm not sure if I'm getting the right emphasis on the flam, I think my grace note becomes barely audible at speed. And I'm just hearing the left strokes being accented.

Secondly, where steve plays those porcaro 'rosanna' type grooves, there seems to be some sort of lead in roll before the blushda, or am I hearing that wrong? Also, there seems to be some sort of roll linking together the series of blushdas towards the end of that groove.

Here's a different example of a "partial" blushda that I did this morning. It's also coming from a straight 4/4 beat and the blushda is played at triplets.

The way blushda was taught to me was a little different approach from Steve's video, but I actually think Steve's approach is easier...

I was taught to do the first flam WIDE OPEN, with both hands accented, the two right ghost notes very soft, and all notes on the left hand accented.

So the accents sound like this:

play 16th notes and accent the CAPITALS

RlRLrLRlRLrLR

That's the FEEL for blushda as accented by the left hand, but obviously not the sticking.

the 16th note accent example is basically how the blushda fill should FEEL when played from a straigh 4/4 beat. So if you look at that example, play all the accents with just your left hand and fill in the flam and ghosts with your right.

Sorry, I don't think I'm explaining this very well at all.

Nice playing there danny. I can pretty much play the blushda at that speed and maintain the openness of the flam. It's just at faster speeds the flam practically disappears, even though I'm still playing that grace note.

On the video I did a six stroke roll leading into it (RllrrL) but once you learn to hear it as a phrase, then you can do whatever you like with it, like Danny did.

At the risk of sounding a pain in the ass, I'm still not sure if my question is answered regarding the flam part. I know you said play it wide open danny, but at higher speeds, it seems almost impossible to keep the flam sounding open/projected [img]confused.gif[/img]
Ah well, I guess I need to practise it slowly again making sure of the flams?
