Ohh such a debatable thing .. posting links rather than the article or photo, and having webpages where people have to register...

Speaking as someone who has a space, there are alot of reasons, from my perspective, that I might have someone register. First and foremost so that I can keep track of bandwidth useage and keep better track of where my links are being posted. Sooo, for example, I recently discovered another website who had a small DH gallery, and every photo on their page was actually url's from my gallery. Meaning, this person's page was using my bandwidth for his purposes. I wouldn't have discovered that if it had not been for the fact the person was a registered user at the DHI gallery.

That is just a small example, but one reason why having people register is not neccessarily a bad thing. I don't actually have a registration process on my website anywhere, but if a person wishes too they can create an account at my gallery, with the only difference being, between guests and members is that members are the only ones that can leave comments about the photos. And again.. I do that so that if someone were to post something inappropriate, say they post a heap of swear words or whatever, I can immediately find it and get rid of it. If I let guests do that, I would have to leaf through over 10,000 images all the time, to make sure nasty stuff wasn't posted. I can't do that lol

So, from the perspective of a website administrator (ohhh I sound so important lol) it does help me out to have people registered, even though I don't really do it and just recently took off the registration process of the DHI message board.

I do think, there is the occassion or two, where a person might posts something, that makes fans go to their website to find the info, rather than just posting it directly on say, the dh.com forums. Every so often I think people do it for selfish/recognition purposes.. to increase visitors to their site.. but I do hope that for the most part, people are just trying to get as much info as possible out and often there isn't time to post everything on the dh.com board so they say "visit here to see it!"

I can tell you, one last example lol, that when I add photos to my gallery, I can't always post every url so that all the pics show on the dh.com messageboards. I just added 40+ new pics and I just can't put 40+ pics up lol So I have to say "just added more pics to the gallery... click here to see them".

I don't really have problems with people having to register to make comments or post on message boards...just if it is to access things but I can see your point about being able to track bandwidth issues.

And the way you typically post links to your webpage Laurie usually works fine as it is a direct link to the picture etc. so I don't have to navigate the site to find it. I also don't mind the link like Spinner did which was also a direct link. I just don't like the the ones where I have to spend time navigating another site.

Anyway...my point was that I have not had time to keep up and the public board is not very helpful for that because so many of the links don't work directly. I just find myself losing more and more touch with what was going on and the whole fan thing because it is just too time consuming the way information is posted. I think it was easier in the days of old before everybody felt the need to create their own webpages.

And I absolutely appreciate those that willingly share. I admit I have never comprehended the whole giving credit to people for recording and posting something as if it belongs to them...honestly I think that is a weird custom. I suppose that is part of where my impression of egos comes in as well.

Honestly Marilue, I wish more direct stuff would be posted too. I sure don't mind when someone says "Hey, just a reminder, there are these items on my/our website so check them out". I often forget who has what of what I might have missed; especially when interviews, videos, photos, etc... come so often. But as far as new stuff, it would be great just to post the whole thing. Makes it easier for everyone.. especially those that have incredibly slow connections. And even for me as well because even though I have a good computer, and I have a cable modem, for some reason there are websites out there that take forever to open.

As for the credits.. I'm kind of an anal about that. Not for me, persay. I am not so stuck on someone saying thanks to Laurie or to DHI or whatever; but when I post something I really do like to be able to say thanks to the person who shared it originally. It's just a common courtesy on my part.

I do think though, that sometimes all of the above mentioned stuff, takes the fun out of everything. I wish it would be easier for people to realize that this is not a competition (not saying everything thinks it is), and that even if someone isn't credited, it doesn't mean the pic/news/interview isn't appreciated because it very obviously is. Sometimes those "politics" get in the way of a good time.

But I do think it is possible for it to be easily pervieved as ego. lol I certainly know the feeling of wanting to share work I've done, yet not knowing how to do that without screaming it out loud. Sometimes, that is just what you have to do.

<font size="3" face="Tempus sans ITC, Papyrus,Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">yep, i love sharing my work but i tend to not do it because i don't want to come across as this pretentious artist who thinks she's all that. But some of my stuff is cool! Cos it took forever to make it and i sweated over it and sometimes suffered minor injuries! LOL

I have to admit i've pretty much given up trying to catch up with all the recent interviews purely for this reason. Some of the sites take soooooo long to load for me and then when they do i have to go through logging in etc, that i just lose patience/intererst most of the time. It's great just to be linked to the actual article i think.

<font size="3" face="Tempus sans ITC, Papyrus,Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Exactly! And that is why it should be shared. You are proud of what you have done and want to share. That isn't a bad thing.

We all need acknowledgement. It's a good thing to get. It makes you feel that what you do, who you are, the time you have spent, is worth-while

*nods along* Yep Laurie, that's about the size of it. And on the scale of how people ask for acknowledgement, leaving a link to one's site is probably less drama-causing then trying to make sure people give you credit. It may be annoying sometimes but at least we don't end up with credit-wars LOL
