I don't mean to start tolling the bells
of woe for this place - but I will. With
so many of us now migrating to myspace
(except buck-the-trender Raggz), and myspace
offering mp3 storage, customisable forums,
PMs blablabla, and moreover, all for free,
how long can a subscription-based
one-trick-pony (no offence) like this last?

myspace used to be cool about a year ago but recently, with all the advertising that myspace has been doing it is quickly becoming what other free online 'hook up' places become. a lot of fake people, a lot of people that join to just whore their band out, people who think that with a keyboard and a mouse comes some type of intelligence, attention whores who need to hear how good they look and basically a lot of worthless internet babble. i still prefer this place due to the fact that it is friends, people don't join it unless they have somewhat of a common interest and it's more like home. but who am i to say, i have never been into trendy things for the sake of saying to begin with.

I agree with Bill...
Myspace is just one big COMPETITION FEST...and Nothing but fakes and to me is a big Online Find Ya Mate Organization. Hince the reason for me leaving that joint.
Sure lots of bands are there...But It just turned out not to be my kinda place to hang out. Now, this place is to me 100% better than that other Garbage.

I don't know about that Creeps, you seem to
get yourself around there more than most.

I understand the anti-sychophancy thing. The
actual 'blog' content, of course, is minimal
at best for most of those pages; but saying that,
I think it's quite a handy little place to
hoist up a cursory band site, 4 free mp3s and
a photo album.

oh don't get me wrong, i've been over and back through the whole myspace site i'm just saying that last year it was more of a community where now it is more of a meat market, look at me and how cool i am, here is a picture of me from 10 years ago when i was in a band, come check out my band playing a corner bar in the middle of nowhere north dakota type site. i have actually been through both of Raggz' brief stays at myspace. and the daily outages, and the lame PM system introduction, and the blah blah blah. it is slowly heading the way of friendster. the new one on the horizon is called friendup.

if you are looking for free mp3 hosting there is always soundclick.

I have yet to do much at myspace. In fact, I have yet to do anything other than pop over there, and get a little lost right away, and then give up on it. I seem to think I tried doing a search, and got lead astray.

Maybe I will look at it again.

As for the intelligence comment there Bill, that is pretty much anything on the 'net. But this day and age is that. ANYBODY can become a published author now, thanks to publishing programs. I was sent a couple of books for review a little while ago. Both books had big ol' "Thanks, I would never have made it without..." types of things in them. Funny thing is that both book were self-published, and the only person should have been thanking was himself. I am impressed that people have the "oomph" to do it themselves, but these were books that had no right being published, as they sucked horribly.

the best over there is the people who think, because they read msnbc.com, that they are now political experts.

Yeh, because MSNBC is your average impartial,
politically unaffected media outlet of course

Looking at photos of people in the erstwhile
bands seems quite harmless to me. I've put up
two myself, so what? Self-styled webcam glamour
starlets (which is what quite a few myspace sites
are premised on) is, I think, something else.

Then again, what fun it is to skim across the
entire site simply by skipping across sexy-
looking photos in peoples' 'Friends List'.

The only pages that get on my tits, are the
ones stuffed to the gills in banners and plugins
and what not. There's no award for highest
number of so-called 'Friends', either, so who cares
what the alleged number is?

And admittedly, if I was a struggling kid in
a band that found itself in a region surrounded
by lots of myspacettes, I'd squeeze that
promotional vein until there wasn't a drop of
claret left.

It's only myspace's multi-muscled hip hop
community that scares me for some reason.

Well, I do agree with both DeviantD and Creeper on their comments. I would have to say for my current band The Retreads it's been awesome. Exposing our band and meeting people to do shows and selling our new CD. Myspace is just another tool to expose your band to a broader scope of people. Glitz is more of a community where everyone at least knows a few people.

I enjoy coming here and reading the posts but Glitz primarily focuses on Glam. Myspace is a better environment for promoting something, making some connections etc. It's too big to be community like. Although I check the punk b-board frequently. The only thing is you can't post replys related to the post as a thread. At our show on Sunday we had 4 people from myspace come down to the show. They were from Vancouver.

So yes you could say it is "whoring out your band" so to speak, but really isn't that what a musician does although I wouldn't use that term?

Try to expose themselves to as many listeners as possible? I mean we all post things here on what we're doing be it a new CD, writing lyrics, scripts etc, but I wouldn't call it whoring ourselves. It's just letting people know what you're about and if they take an interest that's awesome.

Like any community "Glitz" included you'll get the posers, the jack-asses, etc.

I used to come here a lot more often, but I've been quite busy lately and for a good while there, nobody seemed to really post anything or just the same few people.

Okay I've babbled enough...I think there was some point in there...LOL
