two untitleds

[crazy a]

as the pot of water hisses
like the cobra
and the bathtub faucet
drips
drips
drips
into a new day,
I sit at this crowded table
with heavy eyes
and hot dog-scented skin
with a machine that feels
like jackhammers
under my fingertips.

and so I
jack it
and
hammer it
until these
little black shapes
fill the blank space
and I smile,
happy that I could
still put
something
there.

I hear the mouse
trying to dig into
a box of Rice-a-Roni,
the hum of the refrigerator
with old jars of baby food
and uneaten chicken from the 4th of July,
a ringing in my ear from
too much rock music,
the air conditioner upstairs
and a car engine
growling its way up 2nd St.

and that's the news,

2001.
