... if we were blind creatures?...
relying only on our other senses to make
the world around us?
how do you think it would be if you could
only judge a person based on their voice?
their laugh? the way their hair smelled?
the texture of their skin or clothes?
in a capitalistic dream-world in which we
live, a lot of emphasis is ushered toward
that which we can see....
fabulously *perfect* people convince us
to buy products that we simply do not need,
but feel obligated to buy because we are
dissatisfied with ourselves.
in a world of supreme superficiality...
i wonder to what extent would our world
become superficial if we had no sight...
to what extreme would we secretly wish to
be mutilated toward?
in what way would our self-esteem become
damaged?
do you think that even in such a world,
our true character could withstand the strain?

If we were blidn creatures, we would have never gotten up to the point where we are now.
But considering from a biological point of view, that which marks us as being more fertile or healthy (or well-fed, fat is actually a sign of having good times, biologically spoken) would be the points which we would like to accentuate.
My guess would be smell, as that would be the best remaining "long-range" sense that would give a full picture of the other (General health, sex, fertility).
Sorry for being such a scientist in your daydream.
People don't need to lose a sense, they need to get sensible.

I'm going ot agree with zela in the fact that the "dream" is a bit far-fetched....
however, i will not dash this dream, and only add to it's mystery.
Males, as a whole, are very visually driven, and yes, i am a male, and therefore fit in that category. I can not image what life would be like without being able to see things. Not just being able to see females, but other things in general.
But, to answer your question, i agree that zela makes a good point with the sense of smell being one of the stronger of the remaining senses. taste would obviously be out, well, not you shatzy who likes to put things in her mouth at random i also believe that there would be a huge increase in sales for lotion, chapstick, and other skin nourishing products. without being able to see things, the ability to touch a persons hand or arm, would be a very strong factor in choosing a "healthy" person.
that's all for now

my post was secretly discussing self-esteem
issues caused by *visuals*... ie supermodels,
the stuff you own, etc.
my basic point was to try and figure out IF
we would distort our own self-perception in the
same way as we do with having sight....
and if we did... how far would we go? (ie with
sight we have mastered plastic surgery, body
modifications, etc)

Tough question to answer, but I think the same attitudes would still be present, ignoring Zelas thought of we would never be where we are if not for sight.
People would still seek out ways to prove they are better and to have "in-groups" based on something. My guess is that touch would be all important

i agree that we would want to form 'like-groups'...
i also think that we would still remain superficial.
i also believe, like trampis, that touch would
be most important... followed secondly by sound
(voice) and close to second - smell.
i try to imagine myself and what i would prefer
if i had no sight. which of my senses would i
pride over the others...
could i deal with being with someone that felt
really good... soft.... and over-look their
consistant aroma of coconut/banana? could i deal
with a squeeky, nerdy voice?
decisions... decisions....
