Now that we established the deputy was in fact within her "jurisdiction" we must ask; Was she on duty? If so, how much shopping was she actually doing? Just a couple of things like you or I might stop in to get on a break, or lunch, or was she doing her shopping for the whole week? And if so was she on her lunch hour and as such entitled to use it as you or I might? Was she waving her side-arm and threatening anyone or in any way using her authority and position to gain an unacceptable advantage over the other shoppers? Was she driving her cart in a reckless and/or dangerous manner posing an imminent threat to other shoppers?

You see my problem in this whole scenario is that once again you supplied insufficient information for a reasonable person to draw a conclusion, let alone for one of us on here to draw a conclusion.

But based on the scanty and flawed info that was provided I think you have created an issue where there need not be one.

OK. I didn't realize that you needed every single detail.

It was about 4:30, so I don't think it was a lunch break, and her cart was full.

She wasn't brandishing her weapon at all.

I was just surprised that a (seemingly) off-duty LEO was armed in a public place.

Being a LEO isn't necessarily a 9-5 job. Maybe she worked 1:00-9:00 or 12:00-10:00 or some other odd shift. 4:30 would put it at a lunch break time slot. [img]graemlins/smarty.gif[/img]

While I agree that this is pretty much the poster child for non-issues, apparently sexist ones at that, I did check with the Sheriff's office and it seems that Gae is probably right with respect to the deputy wearing her uniform while shopping.

From Steve Barnett, Media and Consumer relations with the Sheriff's Office:

Mr. McCosh, our General Order regarding uniforms states, Wearing of uniforms
is prohibited during off-duty hours, except when the officer is discharging
a an official function or activity of the Sheriff's Office, i.e. court,
grand jury, training, etc, and when performing in an approved off-duty law
enforcement employment.

Grocery shopping would not be permitted under these standards; however, if
an officer was enroute home after a shift and the store was in her/his
direct line of travel, I doubt that they would be punished.

What I don't get, but aren't particularly suprised at, is why this is an issue for the Gaester? And why does she think "female cops are wrong on almost every level"?

I thought that keep 'em home, barefoot and pregnant attitude was drummed out of all but the most fervently neanderthal right wing splinter cells. Perhaps she can express her feelings to one of them should she ever need their assistance.

It isn't an issue for me at all. I was just curious.

And, IMO, women should not be cops and they should not be in combat. Why, yes, I do realize I'm sexist.

I went out with a Cincinnati cop a few times. She was crazy. She did promise me the next time she gave Nate a citation she would tell him "GL says hello"

We all realize it, dear. (I assume since you seem to think your sex is second class that a bit of patronizing will feel just about right to you.)

I am suprised that you would admit publically that you find your daughter not up to snuff though. From prior postings here I was, apparently mistakenly, of the opinion that you thought she was the equal of any man.

Pina, Pina, Pina... maybe you were away, but we've had this conversation.

I don't think my gender is second class, so patronizing me is not a good idea.

About my daughter... Intellectually I think my daughter is equal to any man. Physically, she is not. Most of the female cops I've seen are not. Erin is 5'2" if she stands up really, really straight. Even with training, even with a sidearm, I don't think she'd be much of a match for a 6'2", 200 lb male.

That theory was put to the test at our house not too long ago when Erin wanted to dazzle Bob with a martial arts move, and he had her incapacitated before I could grab the camera.
