UM ROBIN, I hate to break it to you but Mum was right, the only way to truly stop the pain is to pain the socket so that the bone is not exposed. Due to the Holiday I was told by the ON CALL dentist to soak gauze in Cloreseptic and shove that down in the socket, because nobody was going to meet me at the office and do it for me. IT IS EXCRUCIATING followed by relief a few minutes later.
At least I never have to worry about another one...now it one to my partials whoopie!

Are you saying you put water on it directly? I could not tell from your post. There is a difference, I think, in wetting gauze and putting water directly on the socket. Then again, mom could have meant that as well. I thought mom was saying to put water on it directly.

OH I see, YES I mean NO just putting water in it makes for nothing but screaming. I was concerned about the debris way down in there and was afraid I would have to irrigate it first but the dentist said to show the gauze on in...gross and I think he sucks!!!

Amen!
What exactly was the problem - I seem to have missed it. Did you knock out a tooth or something?

NOT...
No I had a molar removed that had a root canal in it which cracked below the gum line AND I too would rather birth children while slamming my hand in a car door than go through the pain of a dry socket again.
