The uncle I mentioned began chemo this week, and was offered the opportunity to participate in a voluntary, experimental, Phizer-backed program, which adds a promising, (as-yet FDA unapproved), third component to the standard two-part chemo regimen. Since it's an experimental program, Phizer picks up the tab for the additional treatment, as well as any treatment that might be required due to unforseen complications that might arise from the administration of the experimental component. Being a long-term supporter of medical research, (his career was servicing medical equipment for Beckman), he gave the go-ahead. I believe the particular program was seeking (and limited to) 28 participants, so if you're interested, ask your mom's doc about it soon.
