A 292 is a 290 without the big can on the back, and usually 8 ohm instead of 4...

Re: ITEMS FOR SALE - Click Here To Buy Or Sell Altec and Altec-related Audio Products

    Always glad to help...

Some background, if I'm not boring everybody to tears....

I think I mentioned I worked for Altec VERY briefly...frankly about long enough to collect one paycheck...

Anyway, as the Vietnam war was winding down, Altec was getting government contracts canceled right and left.

The "Giant Voice" systems used lots of 290's with complicated plumbing into big horns...they hung from helicopters and blasted propaganda out at unbelievable levels.

With the cancellation of these contracts Altec had lots of 290 assemblies and no market...I liquidated several hundred of them....some in the rock market, others as high level voice systems....

Regardless, one of the reasons for my short employment was the inability to keep my mouth shut...my superiors did not care for that....

I frankly told them, you have a serious problem in the rock market...the small format drivers blow up if you look at them crosseyed.

Apparently, a reaction to that was this system which they developed an 8 ohm 290 fram for, slapped a 291/288 cover on the overstock 290 assemblies, and called it a 292.

I can't claim any credit for the design at all. Two issues though, it was louder than stink but no real highs, and it lasted only till the surplus assemblies were used up...as I understand, Altec actually lost money on them the only benefit was liquidating the 290 assemblies....

All this is from someone on the outer fringes of Altec, if anybody can fill in any blanks I would love it. I've always been curious if I was the gadfly behind that project...I have more than a suspicion I was...

Hardly a bore to learn factual info about this stuff.

It's why many of us are here.

Re: ITEMS FOR SALE - Click Here To Buy Or Sell Altec and Altec-related Audio Products

I was thinking the same or it came out of an theater that was being shut down or overhauled.......

But, when I was making my rounds to some of the local theaters in the local area a couple of months ago.... most of the big chains told me they send the stuff back to a corporate warehouse, then it gets disposed of....

Would like to wonder how they get rid of it,,, need to make a few phones I guess, to find out for sure.....

I have seen a auction web site that caters to the theater industry,,, just forgot the link, since huge system broken down and sold by type of tech, lighting, audio, projection , etc.....

I will post the link when I find it.....

"2 Mastering Lab crossover w Urei 813 cabinet altec 604e Item number: 280383442506"

No bids. , Price is a little OTT, esp. considering condition.
Shame it's not east coast, I'd offer something for the cabs.
