I tested 299-16A in MR594 and found them a little dull and diffuse!
on top of my 416-8B equipped 828s bins I found JBL 2445J in 2385 biradials superior in soundstaging/imaging and much more live sounding.more body in top octaves
they in contrast to the Altecs made me feel I was "there"
I also really like the 511Bs with 808-8Bs, same precision as JBL combo and a little sweeter sounding
(all done with N501-8A and 30904)

299's have a different diaphragm than the 288s. Can/have you tried 288 phragms in the 299s? What about the 299s (or 288's) on the JBLs? (with adapters)

thought about trying the Selenium horn I have lying around on the JBLs too
