    Horns

I have been looking for a good horn to mate up with my 399's I got from GPA. I really like the 1505 but they are rare and quite costly when you can find them. These will top off my A7 project so I want something appropriate. I know there are many to choose from.

Since I have a pair of 511B's I was wondering if anyone had adapted the large format drivers like the 399 to the smaller throat 511. I don't want to loose sonic performance. Is this something I should consider or should I use one of the large format horns. What would be a good choice for a home HiFi system. My room is approximately 19ft. X 22ft.
    Thanks...

    The two are mutually exclusive

Old Community horns can be found cheap. The radials aren't bad.

If you have to do anything go 2 inch and adapt up.

    On a really short budget:

Parts-Express.com:Pyle Pro PH916 1.4" Bolt-on Constant Directivity Horn | Pyle PH916 Bolt-On horn bolt on horn 1" horn constant directivity horn

I use to know what these were cloned from, but the old grey matter ain't what the used to be. I think maybe Beyma

They work, and go well to about 800

Ignore Pyle specs, they just buy them from China

Those are "usable", I may be under rating them but to me that is preferable to over rating.

    Re: Horns

DIY a large multi-cell horn shell and use a separate super tweeter horn if you can't EQ it flat enough over a wide enough BW to suit you.

    Re: Horns

It's an option of course, but the 'shell' WG should be lower distortion with the 300 Hz MR94B being the closest Mantaray equivalent.

    Re: Horns

MRII594's are pretty good sounding I used them with 299 drivers .

But when I hooked them to my 803B's ....it was a whole Nother world !

Multicells are Killer. I would like to hear a Cone/Radial in my system to compare!

    Have fun

    Re: Horns

I tested 299-16A in MR594 and found them a little dull and diffuse!
on top of my 416-8B equipped 828s bins I found JBL 2445J in 2385 biradials superior in soundstaging/imaging and much more live sounding.more body in top octaves
they in contrast to the Altecs made me feel I was "there"
I also really like the 511Bs with 808-8Bs, same precision as JBL combo and a little sweeter sounding
(all done with N501-8A and 30904)

299's have a different diaphragm than the 288s. Can/have you tried 288 phragms in the 299s? What about the 299s (or 288's) on the JBLs? (with adapters)

I have a pair of 288C's with 299 frams in them.
