is not a sport!!!
Yeah it is. You go drive 500 miles at 180 mph and see how you do.
well you play a chess match against Bobby Fischer and see how you do...but that doesn't make chess a sport
Why is it not a sport?
you don't have to be an athlete to do it...what athletic skills does NASCAR present?
it would be rough, yes...it'd scare me crapless to be driving that fast in a car going in circles...but just because something is hard doesn't mean it is a sport

what does it take to make something a sport?
This has been debated so many times by everyone from us here in the corner of Va to journalist for large papers and magazines. no one is really going to change their minds.

Endurance for one.
These guys work out as hard as any football player, just to be able to do what they do. It takes alot of physical ability to do a race.

great vision, great reflexes. are two more
heck you gotta have endurance to sit in a hot school room close to summer, but obviously that's not a sport
i guess i have to have endurance to be able to drive from home to richmond or to VT

list the attributes that "athletes" have and lets compare what you consider an athlete and what drivers have
setting in an air conditoned room for an hour sure is tuff.
Race car drivers complain about 3hours in 120 degree heat, what a bunch of pansies.
NASCAR, much like chess, takes no "physical" abilities...it is all mind and sensory skills
Try it and find out.
running, jumping, strength to name a few
But I can run and jump
heck, try getting a 2400 on your SAT, that's pretty hard...it must be a sport too
would that be a requirement in NASCAR...when looking for drivers do they make them run and jump?
Drivers train daily running, lifting weights, and other junk to be able to drive like they do. Guess that makes them athletes.
You're just being obtuse.
all kinds of kids here at VT lift daily but only to keep in shape...they're not athletes...neither is Jeff Gordon
hey hey now, no name calling, atleast not with those big words.
Besides he just trollin anyway.
...yeah that's it...
You know you started this just for an argument, you enjoy it to much.
yeah...i started it...my name is beanpillow
LOL... Didn't really pay attention to beanpillow, just noticed yours. Still you contributed more.
that's because i wanted to express my point
yall got mad b/c you like nascar so you started to attack me instead of my points
Well, I will say this--this is the type of thread that the board needed--things were rather SLOW around here.
all im looking for is the physical (not cerebral or sensory) skills it takes in NASCAR that would qualify them as athletes
it could not be expressed so they went to arguments like "well you couldnt do it"...uhh no sh*t...i cant do a lot of things, but the fact i cant do them doesnt make them sports
so by what you are saying is that drag racing would be a sport, lawn mower racing, tractor pulls, monster trucks, and go karting
sorry left out RC racing
and if you have muscles and can run a mile then what does that matter on how well you drive it is the most pathetic excue for a sport...i would rather watch curling personally

All I am looking for are the physical skills it takes in golf that would qualify them as athletes. Or for that matter baseball how musch more physical than cerebral/mental is this sport.
Ha Ha let's see who all this pis**s off.
what makes fishing a sport...dont get me wrong i love to fish but just never really got what classified it as a sport
I never said anything about fishing being a sport. I don't see it being any less of a sport than golf, actually I am more active fishing than I am golfing.
sometimes it takes strength and endurance to take a s h i t....does that make that a sport?

The endurance it takes.
The strength it takes
two physical skills
what about volleyball or swimming? are they sports. you don't do much running, sure volleyball you move a lot but you don't run up and down a court or field and you don't run at all in swimming.
Endurance yes but a lot of vision (cerebral or sensory). Hey is Tennis a true sport?
golf is a game to me...not a sport
baseball requires running, throwing, jumping at times if you're an outfielder
well then i will tell you...according to webster:
sport:(n) 1.an amusing or interesting pastime, sometimes involving competition: a diversion.
athlete:(n) one who participates in competitive sports.
by those definitions both chess and fishing would also fit within the parameters of being considered a sport. nascar racing is WELL within those definitive parameters. the argument is silly to begin with.
