Re: $2.29

So if you were mowing a yard that in all reality is just worth $40 or $50 dollars worth of work, but this old lady said that she would give you $150 to do it, you wouldnt take it?

Re: $2.29

Here is something that proves your point Raider. I honestly didnt know that it had that big of an impact on healthcare. I still cant go against the idea that Edwards still had a job to do though.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's emergency care system itself is ailing, warns a new health care analysis.

"The emergency health care system's in serious condition. We have a safety net for health care that is frayed," said Dr. Stephen Epstein, an emergency care physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Epstein was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians task force that studied the nation's emergency care. Their report was released Tuesday.

The panel found a system that is overcrowded, with access to emergency care declining and with poor capacity to deal with public health or terrorist disasters.

"Americans assume they will receive lifesaving emergency care when and where they need it, but increasingly that isn't the case," said Dr. Frederick C. Blum, president of the physicians group.

Overall, California, Massachusetts, Connecticut and the District of Columbia were rated best in emergency care, while the lowest grades went to Utah, Idaho and Arkansas.

The number of emergency departments has declined by 14 percent since 1993 despite an increasing number of people coming to them for treatment, the report said.

Hurricane Katrina showed the critical need for surge capacity in emergency medical care when a disaster occurs, the report noted. In addition, every year people suffering from flu crowd emergency rooms.

The compact District of Columbia, which includes several emergency care centers, ranked first for access to emergency care, along with Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. No state received a failing mark for access.

Even so, emergency care is one thing and getting a specialist in an emergency may be something else, Epstein noted.

He recalled an incident in which a Massachusetts 8-year-old was hurt in a sledding accident. The emergency physician concluded that the child needed a neurosurgeon, but none was available in that part of the state that day.

The child had to be transported, during a snowstorm, to a Connecticut hospital for treatment.

Emergency patients tend to be sicker and more unstable than others, causing some specialists to be reluctant to see them because of the higher liability and higher malpractice insurance rates, Epstein said.

The result is that some specialists, like neurosurgeons, leave certain states or refuse to provide emergency care.

In addition to access to emergency care the report also looked at quality of care, efforts to prevent injuries and improve public health so emergency care wouldn't be needed and the medical liability climate in states, such as caps on non-economic damage awards and protection for physicians who provide emergency care
It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.

Re: $2.29

I may be opening myself up to an attack of another kind, but

a. I would (vehemntly) refuse the extra money at first... my mom is the kind of person to refuse such favors and I got it from her
b. If she was insistent about getting the money to the point she was being friendly but forceful I'd assess if she could afford it
- if she could not afford it, I would keep denying her and win, I'd run if I had to (again got this from my parents), or if I lost I would find someway to pay her back non-monetary wise... hell I'd probably love the old woman and call her mamaw
- if she was rich anyways, it's not hurting anyone

Re: $2.29

I'm sorry I got heated on this issue... I'm really sensitive about health care and how some people just don't get what they need.

For example, my father served in the sticks and coalfields of West Virginia (ever heard of a place called Crum-Kermit... thought not) and here in SWVA. A lot of times patients couldn't afford to pay him what was owed and he was the type not to overpursue his fees.

A lot of physicians in parts like ours already take a huge hit as it is serving patients who can't pay them back...

And thanks for the post about the critical state of care, it is lacking...
I'll accept your views on Edwards because you have to believe in your profession to do a good job.
I think Edwards was extremist in his case, but that may be an irresolvable point between us (as we tend to see glaringly otherwise).

LOL--keep hanging around and having conversations like this one with people on here who vehemently disagree with your POV or just plain can't understand it. THEN, my friend, it will get heated...you haven't seen nothing yet (unfortunately)...

Re: $2.29

I did attempt to do some research on a topic that I openly admitted not knowing anything about and told him that he was right. Won't find very many that will do that on here. Hell, that actually is one of the first times that I have dont it matter of fact.

Yeah sorry things got so heated.

You were defending a lawyer's right to practice within his professional boundaries.
I was arguing for a means to fix the glaring lack of health care in parts of our country.

Things will get heated when you can't assess peoples intentions on forums as you can't see facial expressions and other nuances about someone.

Re: $2.29

This in reference to the old woman analogy...

The failure in the descriptive power of the analogy is that the person giving the payment, the woman is wealthy (period)

in health care, though a given hospital/insurance company may be wealthy persay and can give lots of money in a settlement, it's not "their" money persay... medical dollars belong to people who pay for health insurance/coverage

so for a better picture your question would have had to go something like

if a wealthy old woman offered you lots of money for mowing a yard, but she is wealthy because she serves as sort of a bank for a village with thousands of poor people who make 5 dollars a year...
It's really hard to understand all the factors that go into treating patient now that medicine has been heavily legalized, politicized, regulated, and economized...
medical BUSINESS aspects suck... I'm in for a life of headaches... haha but it's the only thing I wanna do

Have some of you ever really done real labor for the talk you spout off about?
Have you worked and had to make it work on mininum wage.
I mean make it all work. Rent, electric, phone, cable if your lucky, food. You know the basics. Without mom or dad paying some of it or most of it? And i mean on minimum wage.
Oh and health care on minimum wage. Yeah it's great. If you can afford it.
Some of you spout off like don't say a word you dumb uneducated fools. Who keeps this country going? The rich or the working class?
Some of you amaze me. I bet you have never had to make what i said on minimum wage without health care and God forbid throwing in any children.
You wouldn't make it a minute.
Now take that from someone who has been there back years ago.
When you paid it all on $3.35 an hour.
Whine about gas prices? Well if you can afford it you won't whine. If you can't then you will say something. So were suspose to suddenly accept the new prices? Did anyone get a boost in pay to cover the sudden increase in fuel prices?
Some of you people i wonder if that silver or golden spoon was taken out of your mouths if you could make it.
Oh and raise kids and pay all the bills. But i know you wouldn't have kids if you couldnt' afford them. Yeah ok. I forget about some the perfect group of know it all's.
Some of you all when mom and dad cut you off or you actually have to make it and pay it all.
Let's see how you whine. Easy to say it when your young and seem to have the world by the tail. Or mom and dad still help with 90% of everything. A lot different when it's just you making it all work.
But i know you all have your own version of reality for the world.
A phrase i remember. From the KJV of the Bible. The poor or working class you will always have with you. Not a direct quote but close enough to say who keeps the world working.
Some of you need to learn a few lessons about real life before you put others down or make acqusations about their abilities. If it wasnt' for most of them. Believe me your family may not have what it has.
