SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — The parents of a 14-year-old Dalzell, S.C., girl have been charged with child neglect after authorities found the girl living in a tent a quarter mile from the family home, banished for a week as punishment, the sheriff's department said.
Crystal Lynn Driggers, 36, and James Allen Driggers, 33, allegedly set up the tent in a wooded area, gave the girl a roll of toilet paper, a flashlight, a whistle and a watch and told her to stay away for a week. She was instructed to appear at a fence on the family property at a specific time each day if she wanted food. Sumter County Sheriff's Department investigators were told.
The girl was banished from her home, parents and four siblings for eating a Pop-Tart, the sheriff's department said.
It's not the first time the girl had been denied access to her home, investigators were told. In the past month, she was allegedly prohibited from entering the home between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.
When violent thunderstorms rolled through the area Thursday night, "the child was also left to fend for herself ," a news release from the sheriff's department said.
Crystal and James Driggers were being held at the Sumter-Lee Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing Friday night. While the girl was in the custody of the Department of Social Services, her four siblings were with their grandparents.

Maine man died over the holiday weekend when fireworks he was trying to launch off of his head exploded.
The Bangor Daily News reported that 22-year-old Devon Staples was drinking with friends to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday when the accident occurred.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Stephen McCausland said that Staples placed a mortar tube on his head at around 10 p.m. and set it off. Staples was reportedly killed instantly from a fatal head injury caused by the explosion.
Staples Facebook page identified his profession as self-employed “Dog Trainer, Dog walker, Dog Sitter, Dog Lover, Doggy Daycare.”
According to The Bangor Daily News, Staples’ death was the first fatality since Maine legalized fireworks in 2012.
McCausland said that several other injuries and cases of property damage due to fireworks were reported over the July Fourth holiday, including burns and eye injuries.

Try a pull-down load to the negative supply rail to force the NE5532 into class A, just a few mA will really make it sound better.
