Does anyone out there have dreams about
super-8? I mean, the dreams where you have
your camera of choice and your on location
filming a feature or something. Lately i've
been dreaming about the Beaulieu 4008.
I just can't seem to get enough of super-8
    film and cameras!

No, most of my dreams involve flying hamburgers, cheerleaders, and melting buzzards.
In other words, kind of like a Dali painting!
    No Super 8 dreams yet!

    Actually, that's not entirely true.
I did have a dream recently that my Bauer 715XL-S morphed into a Canon Scoopic 16mm camera.
But then I realized that I wasn't asleep, and it actually had happened!

Yeah, I dreamed that a camera store, where I left my number in case someone brings in a nice S8 camera, sells me a Beaulieu 9008pro for 25 bucks. I woke up in a great mood until I realized that there was no 9008 around frown

Yeah, just got a Scoopic M.
I'm eager to shoot some footage with it.
I think my on trailer shoot (that has been backed up now to November), I may shoot my night exteriors with it, and intercut with the Super 8 day footage.
    Should be interesting.
It's a cool camera, pretty wild. I got it for $321.00, so I couldn't pass it up!
Seems to run OK, but I haven't tested it with film yet, so who knows.
Any tips you can give me?
Is there anything weird or unexpected I should know about the camera?

By the way, I would like to thank two people for talking me into moving up the food chain to 16mm:

    1. DP John Dick from L.A., who is a freind of my special FX guy on Lost Tribes, who has shot lots of Super16 & 16mm stuff. After seeing his reel of 16mm stuff about two years ago, (long before I had ever seen this forum), I was depressed at how superior it looked to my Super 8 stuff. So I knew it was just a matter of time and expense before I would be shooting 16mm.

    2. Roger Evans (Moviestuff on this board), who for the last few months of our discussions back & forth about the Workprinter I'm getting, convinced me to take the plunge, not that I didn't already want to, but he let me to some websites & stuff, and convinced me that shooting short ends would make 16mm not THAT much more expensive than S8, although still, nothing is as cheap as S8 (in film anyway). So it was the money issue that turned me around.
So, I kept my eyes on ebay for a Canon Scoopic for a good price, and finally found one a couple weeks ago.

I will continue to shoot Super 8, that's why I'm getting the Workprinter, but my eventual plan is to move into real, 35mm feature filmmaking, not to forever shoot only on Super 8.
But I will continue to shoot short "demos" for the purpose of getting people interested in my projects, to interest financiers, etc.

    So thanks Roger & John!

Couple more ideas...the wider the area you need to cover at night, the more it makes sense to shoot 16mm.

The super-8 way to do your shoot, if you insist on seeing wide vistas in your shot...

Is to shoot during magic hour.

    So which is more efficient?

3 - 5 days of short magic hour shoots, or 1 or 2 nights of heavily lit Super-8 scenes, or perhaps 1 night with 16mm and less is more style of lighting.

Final compromise, shoot the wide shots in 16mm, (this also helps alleviate the issue of a loud camera, wide shots are pretty easy to over dub, and the camera may be farther away anyway) and shoot your close-ups and mediums in Super-8mm.

Final Final idea, shoot the wides during magic hour, the close-ups and medium shots at night, all in Super-8.

    Matt,
It is a great little camera, the only tips I have is check out the eyepiece adjustment ring setscrew..they sometimes get stripped and when you move the eyecup around, the eyepiece adjustment ring will move..and check out the the sprockets they tend to get gunked up..and get an external battery..thats a big help..all in all it's a camera that was made to be punished(like in war zones) and keeps chugging along..and you got a great price on it!.good luck with it.

What?..this is the third time I tried to post..
    Matt,
The Scoopic is a great little camera. the only tips I have are..check out the eyepiece adjustment setscrew..they tend to get stripped and when you rotate the eyecup, the adjustment ring moves..and get an external battery pack..other then that the camera rocks!..it was made to be used by news crews and to take the punishments..so it's a war wagon..good luck with it.
