I don't know why people diss genre movies as just films "kids make with their dad's video camera."

Look at the films of George A. Romero. He makes these violent, action *****d films, but they're full of allegories and subtext, Martin being a good example of this. Just because it splashes the screen with blood and gore doesn't mean it's not art.

Anyway, I'm making a road movie for my media production course. It's about two mental patients on the run. I'm trying to make it as serious as possible.

heh, what i meant was i've made three arty shorts about "life" and i loved doing it, but right now i just wanna go and make a good fun vampire flick (though of course stylish and as clever as i can manage [img]smile.gif[/img] ) not everyone starts with the zombies and moves forward some start arty and then just want a rest [img]smile.gif[/img]

Personally i have nothing against genre movies, i have a truly strange taste in film which stretches from Jean Luc Goddard to Armageddon, taking in Almodovar, Leone and Kronenburg along the way. A horror movie can make a point if it wants to, a sci-fi can be a work of art, but from an independent filmmaker point of view the only problem i have is that making a genre pic almost guarantees a 50% drop in production value, even the best horror classics around look just cheap and nasty and thats something i dont want in my films

thanks for the critique [img]smile.gif[/img] the old picture was better but it was too tall and got horribly squished up, and i could never squish up al pacino's face, thats a sin [img]smile.gif[/img] , im working on altering tis dimensions a bit, then i'll replace it.

London isnt actually in europe but its not america and i THINK we are in the EU now, i wouldnt know for sure as i in fact know nothing about the world around me other than filmmaking [img]smile.gif[/img] the news is just too depressing.

I think vampires are one of the most interesting things to make a movie about, but it's a shame everyone keeps falling into the same cliche's.

A few months a go me and a friend wanted to make a story about vampires, so we brainstormed an' all that, and thought of some cool elements, but vampires are just so hard to do!

I like the classical vampire from the books. One who sleeps in a coffin. But the latest movies want to avoid cliche's and make them all modern like, which only causes every new vampire movie to have cliche's because they all have the same type of vampires.

The vampire looking for a soul thing has also been overdone, and although its a pretty cool concept, it has just been overdone. So I thought, why not make a movie about a vampire loving he's a vampire. That's something we haven't seen before, right?

And what's that Peter Jackson thing?

The trouble is that nowadays genre films are just that -- genre films. They borrow heavily from their inspiration and stick rigourously to convention. Even 28 days later wasn't bold enough to stray from the path.

Curse of the Gravewalker is an old 8mm vampire flick Peter Jackson shot about an hour of before losing interest. It looks really good on the DVD, since he bought a lens for his camera and shot it in 2.35:1.

And I'm not at film school, just on a media production course at college. It's okay, I guess. Get to to a few types of mediums, like TV and music videos.
