Hi, remember me? This topic took such an interesting turn that I felt I had to post. Language is one of my favorite things to study! I love Latin although I'd have to say the hardest language I've taken is ancient Greek. The verb conjugations alone are killer- there are moods and aspects that don't even exist in Latin.
Also, I'm taking a writing systems course right now, where we've been talking quite a bit about Chinese. Even if it does have a huge number of characters and seems a bit unwieldy, I find it amazing because it's the only surviving writing system of its kind in the world. I had no idea that many of the characters are actually made up of combinations of radicals and phonetic pronunciations- genius! Although I'm sure it must be daunting to learn.--I'm impressed with anyone who can.
Oh, and...To keep this post at least somewhat related to the topic of manga, I'll add that I recently got a new and much better computer. You probably have no idea who I am, but I was that person who had come here a while ago to offer my copies of "Yakumo Tatsu" as a translation project, but then kind of disappeared (eep! sorry), but I'd like to make amends for that by saying that I can now provide you with the actual scans from my volumes of it if you'd like. Next month I'll be graduating and moving back home, where I'll have access to my sister's scanner, so I could even scan in the entire manga for you myself if you would like.
Oh, and I promise to try and be a good girl, and not lurk so much!

Chinese takes a bit of memory work, but it isn't that bad. People who haven't taken Chinese have an impression that learning characters is pure memorization. But it's not true. If you know the meaning behind radicals, or if you think of it in terms of a combination of characters, it's a lot easier. Reading and writing is ok for me (as long as I have my computer heheheh. typing in chinese saves so much time. gotta love technology). But what's up with the dialects... jeez.. if there's got to be dialects why can't cantonese be the main one? And why are most manga publishers from Hong Kong/Taiwan!!! I love my simplified characters. Down with traditional!!
