IT'S HAPPENING 5-3.... WISE COUNTY CONSOLIDATES!
Greatest thing that could have happened!
oy vey.... this is gonna get interesting....
That is the best news I have heard since my baby was born.
Is this real???????? A done deal? Was there a Schoo Board Meeting tonight?
I can't believe it. I believe it's long overdue, but didn't figure that this board had the balls to do it.
IN SHOCK if this is legit.
Wow, think about the football we will be watching a couple of years from now instead of this crap that is no where near the LPD that we all remember.
For we non Wise Countians, which schools would consolidate? What do you do with Burton being a city school?
PV/APPY, JJK/POUND. COEBURN/SP. The Burtonians can fend for themselves!
Burton is a city entity. They arent under the control of the county and hence will remain independant.
I guess that we'll have to put burton in the cumberland district.
Pretty cool news, even though I'd guess it would take years to finalize at the rate things have been going.
Burton will be the lil guys from now on! No more putting that on Appalachia! UH OH!
My God, can you imagine the pandemonium in the streets of appy tonight?
THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING!

you mean there are still people in the streets there
lol! Let ID drive and post back! lol
As small as Appy is, they should be moved in by the fall of 2009. No reason why the logistics should take so long to finalize.
Wonder how long it will be before CNN televises the Appalachia--Big Stone Gap Civil War?

Early (yet uncomfirmed) reports are saying 3 new facilities within the county.
It's a big topic regardless but we should all probably hold off on speculation and see what the accurate reports are in the morning.
Powell Valley does not have enough room to take on that low of a student population.......9-12??
it absolutely does... they actually had about 200 more students in the early 90s and did just fine.
Powell Valley would have the same attendance they had in the 80's right. So, what is the problem?

Isn't powell valley already using trailers and closets for teaching space? and no one said they were just taking appy and moving them into PV. If this consolidation means new facilites they won't be putting Appy into PV before new facilities are built. To say they are would be jumping to conclusions.
And really we don't have cold hard facts on this meeting from tonight, yet.
PV facilites are the pits. New facilites are a definite requirement. IMO
How many Appy students will go to Burton I wonder?

That transition will be smoother than expected. Almost everyone is related and have relatives in both towns.

Prolly very few.
Nothing has been passed. All that passed tonight was a motion to have a public hearing on 11/3 at 6PM in the Kelly auditorium. This public hearing is a pre-requisite to holding a vote on consolidation.
As it stands now, I see consolidation happening. Then again, it could be a Dickenson Co. type of consolidation where the measure passes, but nothing ever takes place.
If it hasn't been passed...there will be hell at that meeting. I was under the impression it passed.
Im going to be there for that it should be great.
I believe Norton will pick up quite a few students as well. They will get all those students just outside the city limits that normally went to county schools (i.e., Thackers Branch, Guest River, Tacoma, Josephine, Dunbar, some Appy kids that WON'T go to PV, and a few others.) I see there enrollment still being small but a lot larger than it has been IF this happens. I could see us in the 350 range maybe more.
It won't be PV..

He's right. Nothing passed. They have to have the public meetings before they can actually vote. If I understand it, even if the school board votes to consolidate, the board of supervisors could still shoot it down. My question is how many Wise County citizens can afford at least a 20% tax increase? I was at the meeting tonight and that was the figure that kept coming up with 3 new schools.
It would be 3 new schools. All six would be closed and 3 new ones built.
Well...that's a horse of a different color..
Unless everyone else in Wise County has property taxes like they are in Pennsylvania then 20% is not as much as what everyone thinks it would result in...I will gladly pay 20% more for my children to have a much better education as a result...I did the math on how much 20% on my taxes are now and what it would mean and think I can handle the increase as it is no where near what my mother pays of at least $1,500 for much less house and land in Pennsylvania and that is one of the lowest property taxes for a person you will find there.
Property tax for county and town all add up..Wise Co. isn't exactly the cheapest taxes around either. It isn't like the school is gonna educate the children...teachers do. And I doubt there'll be much change over there.
With the economy the way it is everywhere, I don't think Wise county needs to be starting on any major projects like building 3 new schools. We've got too many people in this county on fixed incomes who can't afford any tax increase.
