Warp speed is complicated. There are 2 scales - TOS and TNG use different warp scales.

TNG speeds are faster. In TOS they once went at warp 13, for example, and the old Enterprise was shaking apart.- That's nothing in TNG terms - I can't remember exactly, but either warp 6 or warp 9.

Warps are exponential. But more than that - in TNG, Warp 10 means infinite speed.
It's not a barrier that can be passed. It is _infinite_ - You can't go at Warp 10, or higher.

However, warp 9.999 is far faster than warp 9.99. And the more 9s you add, the faster it gets.

One other thing - Cruising at whole number warp speeds is more energy efficient. Warp 9 is much more efficient than warp 9.1 or warp 8.9

You will normally go for whole number warps, but at times you can't - matching speed with something, for example. Also note that after warp 9, there are noo more of these low energy points. Since you can't get to warp 10.

Honestly, I've never heard the term 'TOS'

In 'All good things' Crusher's med-vessel goes warp 13 straight off, and that's TNG.
But it was in the future, so I'm not sure. Maybe they rewrote the warpspeed chart again.

And the Enterprise used to shake apart under warp 7.

I was hoping you wouldn't bring up the warp 13 reference. The best theory is that warp 11, 12, 13 etc are shorthand for the speeds between warp 9 and warp 10.

so perhaps warp 9.999 might be "warp 11" and warp 9.9999 might be "warp 12".

So are we using warp 13 or what? We are, of course, faced with the problem of how warp factors correspnd to hyperdrives. In the event someone wants to chase a Star Destoyer, or vice versa, for example, whos ship is faster?

I have recently been looking into a SF book called The Jagged Orbit. It is great. If I am to believe the writing on the cover, it won an award. However, because I have never heard of the award, I can't place too much weight on that. For all I know, they could have made the award up for the sole purpose of marketing the book.
I am having a really great time understanding this book. It's quite clear that making the thing comprehensible was not among the chief concerns of the author, and he comes up with some of the worst sentences at times. However, I'm not really sure I should be quoting chunks of writing, so I'll settle for a couple of little bits that I think were jokes. Well, I found them funny.

As opposed to a pirate. If anyone ever reads this and we get enough people maybe we'll start but I'm worried that someone (as usual) will post and put themselves in an important place and then not log on for three weeks again.

I think the thread idea should be put to use for once, and instead of saying "I think someone should..." you should just start a thread. thats my bit of ins..per? / pir?..ation you know the word anyway...
