And if you punish the whole group because one kid is a cretin, pretty soon the rest of the group destroys the cretin from the inside. By punishing the cretin separately, you draw attention to it, and make it kind of a hero. If you punish everyone, no one thinks that the cretin is cool.
It is military recruiting. Don't give in!
No matter who you punish, cretins are always cretins. It just happens that way.

I would have liked to see how long the Hell thread could have gone without combat.

On a more military note, they showed us a cool video of soldiers doing things that looked kind of fun. That made the army seem good. Then they sent us on a 1 hour exercise which almost crippled me, and gave me a cold because it was in the rain.

I don't think it was blatant recruiting. Is that why Girls' High didn't do it? They obviously want to get people to join the army, being recruiting officers and all. But it was meant to be leadership\teambuilding, and it was exactly that.
We did teambuilding exercises and after each one an army guy said "What kind of leadership was demonstrated?" and the moral was always that we should have had a leader and should have planned it first.
The only bad part was that everyone waffled on an on in the theory bits. Perhaps they were trying to suggest that you could join the army and rant in front of students about a dog barked and scared your children.
Punishing the group has three big flaws. First, it can backfire. Half the class will say "Tama got us held in" and half will say "Mrs. Smith held me in, and I didn't do anything". I've seen this happen; People see the hand holding the stick.
What message are you sending? You punish the team so that they punish the individual. Why didn't you just punish him yourself? Either you couldn't (weak leader) or you like hurting everyone (sadistic leader).
Finally: While you might get a power trip from making your team turn against each other, it's not going to improve efficiency... and that's the leader's job.

Besides, in 7th form, Your apparent 'leaders' ie, head boy & stuff won't show a single leadership quality. You're own your own, just do your work and pass that shit.
Say you are going to punish the Cretin. There are to ways to do this: publicly, or privately. Either in front of the class, or in the principals office.
If you punish the child in the principals office, no one sees what has happened. If the child comes back with no obvious bruising, the other children will think " Hey! Why is it that I don't do that? I mean, it's hardly as though they punished him for it. " Then everyone copies that behavior because it is more fun, and as far as they can tell there are no consequences.
So the only way that can work is if the cretin comes back sobbing.
If you punish the child individually in front of everyone, the child cannot really listen. In the childs mind, the only thing it has to do is maintain its image. So no matter how well the teacher chastises or punishes the child, the child will only laugh, grin, and make fun of the teacher once it sits back down. Everyone laughs, except the good kids, who were never any problem anyway. This method does not maintain discipline.
However, if you say " The cretin has [something moderately bad]. So, in consequence, you will all stay in for five minutes at lunch time.", everyone complains bitterly. At first they might blame the teacher, but really, what kind of teacher puts being liked ahead of discipline? Eventually, after a few days of saying " In consequence of the cretins behavior...", it gets through the class's heads, and they realise that it is all the cretins fault. Eventually, even the cretins friends will start saying " Shut up, you bastard, or we will have to stay in again this lunch time."
Oh, and Tiberius- you are being mighty hard on us. Calling us all sluts is a bit general. Certainly there are quite a few, but we aren't all.

Did the teambuilding exercises involve little games? On a course I went to earlier they had stuff like a dummy stranded on the other side of an invisible stream or mudslide, and they gave us some sticks and some rope (sticks being shorter than the river, of course) to retrieve them. There was also one where they tied up some rope between two trees making a rectangle divided into eight sections (rope splitting it horizontally, vertically and two diagonally), and we had to pass the people in our team through without anyone touching the rope, and only using each gap once.
There wasn't too much of that on the course I went on most recently, as the focus was more on tramping, navigation and bush survival stuff. These people are the type that say you should take a couple of litres of water for a few hour tramp, as well as your raincoat, emergency shelter, survival kit, food for a day or so... They overreact a little to this sort of stuff.
There was a good quality confidence course, complete with a very nice sized flying fox, and a rope you're meant to slide down backwards on for a few metres without holding on.
The weather was a bit odd. Most days were perfectly clear, but the sun didn't get over the mountains until about 10 or so, and it was freezing until then. One guy told me he was in eight T-shirts, two hoodies and a rain jacket on his top half. To top that bit off, the tents we were in for the most part had no floors, doors that were difficult to close (and popped open if you looked at them funny) and a nice night breeze to carry the fresh cold air right to where we slept. We (in the middle of summer, no less) got snow on top of the mountains. This made river crossing very interesting. However, once the sun got to us it was absolutely beautiful. Sunny as anything, with the possible exception of the sun.
If you're looking for a safe position in the New Zealand military, look to the RNZAF. Lord knows they're not doing anything any time soon. However, I was told that policemen get paid a bunch more than army people do. If all else fails, officers in the Australian cadet forces get paid 10% less than reserve people of comparable rank in the military, for looking after a bunch of kids. I met someone who saw them over there, and he saw them say to the army "I'm doing this selection for promotion thing at my unit, can we borrow some Steyrs for some target practice?"

And, most importantly, this morning at 7:30 at the Sky City bus terminal a man walked through the medium sized crowds playing his bagpipes. It was completely random, and what topped it off perfectly was the little following of about four people he had following him through town. That man is my hero.

Martin, you just copied my post in one thread, and posted it in another. How is that helpful? Well, anyway... I've forgotten what I was going to say, so either way it can't have been important. Never Mind.
Yes, I remember you mentioning your concern over the quality of that post, and I also remember it being agreed on that the thread starter should be able to implement changes upon posts that go against the initial intentions they had for the thread. Apparently these abilities were not formally instated as the thread starter in question had to request a moderator to carry out the changes necessary to maintain the course of the thread.
Martin, what happened there? Was he supposed to have the power to do stuff, and didn't for some reason, is that not possible, or did I misinterpret the official stance on that matter?
As I see it the thread is not actually about Hell, as such, or religion in any direct fashion. I don't think anyone would have anything against characters with religious beliefs, but I think those would be the exceptions that prove the rule. As far as I can ascertain, we have a post-apocalyptic setting in which crazy people kill each other, or maybe don't kill each other.
Any improvements or corrections upon that would be appreciated, as it would not only help us not throw the direction of the thread off and also make it easier for new characters to enter, knowing what would be expected.
